Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

I currently have an Xbox 360 which I also use as a media centre on my main TV. I'd love to also have media centre capabilities on another TV which could now be possible for £50 if I get an Xbox from Argos in their Christmas sales.

My question's are, how would I carry out a softmod of the console? Is there a guide that is accurate and commonly used?
Would I need to download XBMC dashboard? If so, has anybody got a link to the latest version and instructions on what to do with the file?

I assume I need FTP software? I use CuteFTP 8 Professional, is that OK?

Many thanks for any help at all

Re: Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

For the softmod you need a memory card and 1 of 3 games, The game I used was Splinter Cell.

I personally used krayzies mod and found it easy using this http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox...r-1-1-1-a.html

I found it suprisingly easy to follow.

Re: Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

Many thanks indeed.

I assume XBMC dashboard is something else entirely?

EDIT

Also when you mentioned Splinter Cell being one of three games used to softmod, would this be the one I need?

Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory

You can have Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) as either an Application OR a Dashboard see here

http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/inde..._Online_Manual

Its a guide that is fairly simple for me to understand so it should be pretty easy for everyone else to understand lol.

No sorry, must be the original Splinter Cell game, but it can be any version including the classic version.

If you are using a USB memory stick to transfer your saves I found this guide invaluable.

Re: Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

If you cover P&P Costs I would be happy to send my memory unit with krayzies on it and if you need it Splinter Cell.

I no longer need the memory unit I am just keeping it for emergencies and if I decide to install another HDD.

In respect to the XBMC you will need to find out how to install that yourself.

But in the process I will urge you to FTP your xbox after you backup your eeprom and retrieve it before completeing installation just incase anything happens.

If you are interested in it as well (Have not used it myself) I have the 600MB version of Cash V1.1.

There is a manual of this cash disc if you want to see what it does/can do as well.

Re: Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

What can I say, thankyou very much, such a helpful gesture though I won't be taking you up on it.
After a little thinking, I came to the conclusion that the original Xbox is far from the pretiest consoles and wouldn't look that great under my TV which sits on a nice glass stand, also that the Xbox would only be used as a media centre.
Now if I splashed out on a second 360 then I get another media centre with the added bonus of being able to play in a room other than our living room which sits directly under my daughters bedroom. This makes it difficult to play on Live and use the headset after 8pm.
Its not the cheapest alternative but it kind of ticks most boxes.

Again, many thanks for your kind and trusting offer, it was very much appreciated

Re: Fools guide to Xbox softmod and XBMC?

Just a quick note though. I have both the 360 and Xbox, and the Xbox has by far the best and most flexible Media Centre between the two. At £50 from Argos, it is also by far the cheapest solution.

Yes, its the £50 deal which had me interested.
I had one reserved but chose not to collect as I think I'd like a little more from it than just a media centre. The ability to play 360 games in another room is very appealing which is why I'll pick up another 360, possibly waiting a while for a good deal as I'm not interested in any current bundle deals.
