Stock Xbox with a bad Hard Drive

I have an old xbox and the hard drive crashed on me, so now it gives me a message to contact microsoft everytime it starts up. The hard drive makes a ton of noise, so you can definetly tell it's busted. I never did any sort of mod to this thing, so it just died of old age. I just want to replace the drive so I can play games again. I have some working 40 gb drives and I'm wondering if I can just stick one of those in there. I don't need to use xbox live or anything, I just need it to play regular xbox games.

You can use one of your 40gb drives but you will need to buy a mod chip

Well I could probably get a used xbox for around the same price as the modchips i've seen, I was hoping there was some way I could just put the xbox software on my hard drive and stick it in.

HD are tied to the motherboards hence you need the chip to be able to stick a newer (larger) drive..

I don't see any codes it just does the xbox logo, then says "Your Xbox requires service, please call Xbox customer support"
The eject button blinks red and green.

If I get a modchip, I can just stick any hard drive in and it will work? Or do I need to do something to the hard drive still?
