XBOX error 12

Getting error 12 on a softmodded box, starts up sometimes as normal, other times error 12.

Only used for XBMC nothing else. Anyway of doctoring it to think it has a working drive attached ?

I think it is a power problem as the drive will not eject when it starts with error 12.

Any suggestions

Xbox Error 12

Xbox Error 12:DVD Error (PIO/DMA)

I hope following solution will work for you...

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the DVD's IDE cable (the flat broad white cable). If this does not solve the problem, try replacing it with a new IDE cable... can be found in any PC in your home (it connects the DVD/CD drive and HDD to main board). Hopefully this will solve the issue... but if the problem persists, you may have to replace the DVD drive with a new replacement one which will be a costly option

What version is it ? ..... bridge a couple of small points on the motherboard and flash a hacked bios to the TSOP, the iND-BiOS 5003 or the X2 5035 (amongst others) will allow your xbox to boot without the DVD drive attached.

Follow the pics in the link

TSOP Flashing

The top 4 pics are for the v1.0 - v1.1 consoles, use the 1024kb X2 5035 if your boards like that.
If your boards like the bottom 4 pics use the 256kb iND-BiOS 5003

To flash it, install EvolutionX as an application eg: E/Apps/EvoX

FTP your bios.bin file to E/Apps/EvoX/bios

Restart xbox, launch EvolutionX, under the (i think) `settings` option, there will be a `Bios` option, click that, listed should be the bios you FTP in earlier, click on it and the flashing should start.

The TSOP guide refers to Xbox upto version 1.5...
Is there a way to do the same for Xbox 1.6, in case its DVD drive is out of order??

Theres no TSOP on a v1.6 console - Your only option is a mod chip.

Any mod chip will do, if you flash it with the iND-BiOS 5003 (for cheap mods or v1.2 to v1.5 TSOPs) or the X2 5035 (512kb - 1mb for later generation chips or v1.0 or v1.1 TSOPs) by default your xbox will boot up error free without the DVD drive attached.
For the EvoX M8 thats on your chip you need to use EVTOOL to patch the bios prior to flashing. (see attached pic, under `toggles` uncheck `DVD Drive Check`)

Great Great Great Great Great!!!
Sir... you have solved one of the biggest worries I had about my Xbox! A really BIG THANKS from me!!

Edit: Err... Sorry to bother you again and again Chett.. But just had a question, you know I successfully flashed my Super Aladdin Live under your kind guidance few days back through AID 4.5, but is there any other way to flash bios other than Slayer or Auto installer, especially if the DVD drive is dead.
My Samsung drive is already giving problems reading discs esp DVD/Rs, which work after good 15-20 attempts (imagine what a headache i had again n again putting AID/Slayer DVDs in drive and ejecting just to make em run).
If I should flash my bios with NO DVD Check mode bios before the dirve totally dies, how can I do it (or is it possible to use newly created bios with AID etc) and also if drive is not working if there is a way to do it through FTP or Xbox HDD. Please accept my sincere appologies for bothering you so much but I am totally new at this and need help. Thanks

Its no trouble ........... Flashing a different bios wont magically fix your DVD rom, if it stops working it wont stop your xbox from working but if it shows errors like the original posters or if you want to completely remove it then using a hacked bios will sort it.

You can FTP a bios.bin file to the bios folder within EvolutionX and use that to flash rather than some DVD based flash tool
you could run Raincoat and telnet into your xbox to flash your chip
you could pull the SST 49LF020 chip out of the alladin and replace it with 49LF020 you want to flash then switch them back.
or take the dvd drive that works and swap it temporarily for the knackered one to do DVD based flashing.
