connecting xbox to network

Hi , I have recently got an original modded xbox xnd have it on my network , however i had to move my modem into the room with the xbox , to connect xbox to router , now my main PC downstairs is running wirelessly , and not got the best of speeds , so my question is ,
Is there a piece of hardware to connect to xbox , that then connects to a wireless network , so i can place my modem back downstairs and hard-wire it to pc .
I have read that you can run 2 modems on one network , but networking aint my best subject , is there an easier method ,
Many thanks in advance

Re: connecting xbox to network

Can you not run one cable from your router to the xbox and another from the router to the pc?

Re: connecting xbox to network

Try and get hold of a cheap/free BT Home Hub (V1), we've just set one of these up for our daughters iMac in her bedroom to connect to the main modem downstairs, as long as your main modem has WDS, you should be able to use it with the Xbox.

I am going to try this with another HH and a spare Xbox we have in the loft to see if it works over the next couple of days and will let you know what happens if you don't get sorted by then, (I know women and wires don't get on: ) ).

We got our 3 HH's for free (Off our local Freecycle) and the main one (temp, as the Netgear needs new power plug) is flashed with Thompson firmware and the 'dongle' has downgraded BT firmware (6.2.2.6) and worked with instructions from Here.

Re: connecting xbox to network

alternatively you could use an ethernet over the powerline adaptor like ComTrend Power Line Ethernet Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo you can probably pick a set up cheaper on ebay.

this is how my setup works and streams are handled fine over the 200mbps versions.

Re: connecting xbox to network

Hi , Thanks for taking the time to reply guys ,
Alty , my broadband connection is cable , so not sure if this will work bt hub ?
Did consider plugs Spike , but was lookin for cheap solution , would you think the 85mbs will work well enough for video streaming ? as there only about £20 ,

I have a spare router somewhere but as i said , i aint got a degree in networking , so was looking for a plug and play solution , thanks for the ideas guys ,

Re: connecting xbox to network

Hi southpaw, it doesn't matter about it being cable as it's just the Hub connecting to the Modem, as long as both (wireless) modems have WDS I'm sure it would work.

The Belkin kits from Curry's (£20 atm, if you can find some ) can stream video and some have reported HD.

Re: connecting xbox to network

A couple of "almost" plug and play options are the Linksys gaming adapter : Linksys WGA54G Wireless-G Game Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo - Linksys WGA11B Wireless Gaming Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo
or, a wireless bridge, something like this from netgear : Netgear WGE101 Wireless Ethernet Bridge Review - Networking Reviews - TrustedReviews

Hi southpaw1, as I thought you'd got sorted I unsubscribed to this thread.

I never got round to it in the end as one of our daughters was off School shortly after for 6 weeks also we were starting to get ready for Xmas (It's like a military operation with 5 kids ) and shopping in our house has priority over 'messing with gadgets' (I do love the way women have the ability to simplify everything we do ).

I do have the 3rd HH all ready (Set up) to connect to the existing network, it's just a matter of getting up there and trying it which I hope to do over the next few days, if you've sorted it let me know.

Cheers for replying Alty , please do let me know how you get on with it, i still not sorted mine , as it involves swapping routers to a wds one , (My eldest would go Ape if i were to loose internet connectivity for any amount of time). Thought i had it tough with 2 kids , lol , 5 kids ,

Curious to know if homehub can function free-standing , without being physically connected to a pc ,as if so , it would suit my needs perfect ,
all the best mate ,

NP I will update you when I get around to trying it, in the mean time go here and have a read on what the HH can do:

Index Home Hub items

And yes you can have it free standing, as we can still access both ours (Wii, PSP, iPod Touch etc....) when non of the computers are on or connected.

It's really quite versatile, ours (main HH) has the Mac connected (wired, Ethernet port 1) and then it has a Netgear Switch connected into the 2nd Ethernet port with original Xbox, a 360, and a PS2 connected and a Wii through wireless.

The Second one is upstairs connected to one of our daughters iMacs and gives us 100% coverage all over the house.

As with any wireless access security is an issue but once your initially set up I can let you know how we have ours set up.

You can even connect a USB Hard Drive to one....

Regards

Leon

Hi, haven't forgot you, just the kids aren't back at school, closed due to snow and all they want to do is build snowmen and igloos!

I've got a day set aside for 'messing with gadgets' and should be able to let you know by Monday.

Apologies southpaw1 if you've been waiting on any info from me, in the end I couldn't try it as shortly after posting we moved to 02 and the modem they supplied doesn't support WDS and we couldn't use the HH with 02 (there are hacks around but personally didn't think it was worth the hassle and effort for the, not always 100% results).

I did try it with a Netgear (ex Sky) but they apparently aren't fully compatible with the 02 service? and the WDS was erratic in use.

So at the moment our network is not 100% (3 redundant HH's) and I am currently looking at compatible alternative modems with WDS.
