Xbox as Media Centre

Hey guys,

After reading thread after thread for the last couple of weeks I decided to softmod my xbox that was collecting dust in the attic.

Softmod done and working.

I am confused about how to make XBMC my default dash. Think this is due to reading too many different tutorials. My file directories are not what the tutorials are saying they should be. So dont really know what .xbe I should be renaming/replacing. Help would be appreciated.

Also need to buy a new cable to allow me to view in HD. Any recommendations?

Is this any good?

Thanks in advance.
Dale.

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

If you havent changed anything your soft mod dash should be on `E`

You can FTP and overwrite it but the safest/easiest method is to download XBMCID : Auto Installer Deluxe - Softmod Installer Deluxe - PSP Installer Deluxe | Official Torrent Tracker and use the `softmod` section to install XBMC to `E`

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Are you running UnleashX as your main dash ?

Skins
config.xml
evoxdash.xbe
items.xml

those above are your dash files - the rest UDATA/TDATA ( game save files) Cache, Backup & Apps need to stay on E ......... The safest method of changing your boot dash is by using the XBMCID link a couple of posts above.

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Yeah I am currently running UnleashX as my dash.

Okay currently downloading required file. Can I just FTP XBMCID to the Xbox and run it that way?

Just wondering if the cable I posted a link to in the first post is what I should go for to view the xbox in HD?

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

No, When you download XBMCID you need to click on the first file and extract with winRAR, once extracted burn the .iso to DVD-r and boot your xbox with it.

As for the cable, i dont know - looks similar to the Monster cable i have and thats pretty decent.

Re: cable

I have an IXOS component cable (not XBox) and it is undoubtedly a very well made product and I've had no problems with it.

Only trouble I can see with that one though is it appears to have no optical audio TOSlink port. If it it did I'd probably buy one myself at that exceptional price. Might not bother some people but particularly for media centre use it is a significant design omission and maybe explains the pricing.

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Do not know if anyone can help but here it goes. I have an Xbox Crystal that I wish to softmod to XBMC and then have connected via my NAS for music/video/photo playback. So far I have the MechAssault game needed aswell as an Xbox memorycard but do not have the action replay memory card cable.. is there any way around this at all? (do not want to pay £14.99 for a cable)

Video wise it would only be playing DVDs stored in VIDEO_TS folders with 5.1, subtitles, menu, extras, etc (can it play this format?)

Can anyone guide me in the right direction at all? I find the 360 to be terrible with regards to media playback hence the Xbox and the XBMC route.

Thankyou

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Hello,
If you have a friend with a modded console you could FTP the game saves to the UDATA folder then copy them to your memory card ....... If you are really stuck I`ll stick them on your memory card for you.

I know it may be cheeky but that is something I would really really appreciate! Just would like to be able to stream my DVDs over. That is what the 360 was supposed to do.... pain in the ass that it is

Oh and the memory card will be on its way tomorrow. Cheers for that

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Hello, PM me your email address and ill send you a copy of the SID 5.10 manual .... Its wort having a browse through chapters 4 to 9.
(it mentions XBMC on the installer but thats a special USB version, forget that for the moment)

Its a simple process, roughly :

Copy the files from your memory card to the xbox hard drive
insert MechAssault, select `campaign` then select `Run Linux`

you will be greeted with the Softmod menu

Click on `Backup / Restore features`
select `Create MS Backup`

Then once its done its stuff

Click on `Install single boot Softmod`
Then click `Standard`
Then `UnleashX dashboard`

And thats about it ....... To get XBMC on your xbox i recommend using XBMC Installer Deluxe :
Auto Installer Deluxe - Softmod Installer Deluxe - PSP Installer Deluxe | Official Torrent Tracker
Boot up with the XBMCID disc, use the `Softmod` section and install XBMC as your main dash to the E partition.
Reboot and your all done

There are other ways to achieve the same result, but this is by far the safest method, AID - XBMCID & SID are made by the same guy so they`re all compatible with each other.

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Another way (probably riskier..) would be to use the "hotswap" method. Hotswap Can Fix Xbox With Error 13, 14, 16, 20 And 21. Hotswap Can Reinstall Xbox's HDD To Factory Condition. Hotswap Also Install Or Reinstall Softmod Files. All Dashboard Problems Go Here. A Trick To Use Xboxhdm In Hotswap UPDATED 12/12/2006.

Use the Auto Installer Deluxe disc, scroll down to the `Dashboard section` select : Install E Drive Dash (softmod) - then select XBMC ..... Thats it, reboot and XBMX should be your default dash.

That Auto Installer Disc i sent may take a while to boot due to the size of the config file, but it does work.

Hi quick question, I think i'm in the same boat having installed xbmc using evolutionX I cannot get xbmc as the default dashboard.

If I use the the auto installer above to change the default dash to xbmc the guide states I have to reinstall the softmod again? Would that not just reinstate Evo as the dash again.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Never mind, this post worked perfectly

I'm glad it worked out alright for you and it's interesting to look back that my advise to people about krayzie ndure installer did pay off theres no need for auto installer discs.

Bend over while AVForums blows smoke up your ass, surely by using Krayzies ndure installer you are automating the softmod process ..... not everyone can be bothered with Font/Audio modification, learning Mirc for xbins, using a PC to FTP or have the time/inclination to mess about with xboxes - Auto Installers have their place.

Whats with the attitude

You clearly have never used or understand how krayzies works and ftp is not hard to use even for basic users.

Re: Xbox as Media Centre

Apologies if my attitude offended, saying there`s no need for Auto Installers is the kind of elitist mentality you expect from someone at x-s, as stated, not everyone has the time or inclination to learn what goes where and how to get it, if you want to go from stock xbox to XBMC in about 10 mins, then Auto Installers certainly have their place.

As for Krayzies, you mean the exploit that loads a kernel patcher to alter the bios in memory to look for a hacked dashboard to boot up the softmod ? .... Used it once.

sorry to revive an old thread, but have a few questions about this if you don't mind. OH has just set up the wii as a sort of media center in the living room. It plays music pictures and video on the TV. It can access them from a 500gb ext hard drive set up to the wii and also wirelessly from both of our laptops.

I am now itching for a similar set up in the bedroom, and have an old original xbox that was chipped (is this the same as modded?) lying around. Whilst researching I came across this thread, and thought I'd ask if I can do the same as hes done with the wii using the xbox and xbox media center by following the instructions in this thread?

Is the method explained in this thread still the best way, and I assume it will need a bigger hard drive. Whats the best size/make to install? Also whats with the beef about auto installers?

Hello, If your xbox is chipped just stick in any IDE hdd, grab a copy of Auto Installer Deluxe and use that to set up your hard drive, It`ll detect the new drive and format it for you, then simply use it to install XBMC to your C: partition, reboot and you`re all done.

Theres no limit to the size of hdd you can install BUT you may have to update the bios on your modchip to one which has LBA48 support so it`ll recognize any space above 137gb ..... The X2 5035, EvoX M8 or the iND-BiOS 5003 all support drives above 137gb and are probably best of the bunch.

The only thing close to a wireless dongle is one of those Linksys wireless gaming adapters or some other type of wireless ethernet bridge. Linksys WGA54G Wireless-G Game Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Once you have XBMC installed you could just stream all of your files from a networked PC or storage device, doing away with the need for a bigger hard drive.

XBMC is very good, but it does lack HD, if you can live without it just softmod with splinter cell game save linux hack, its easy.
