xbox? media centre? I'm confused.com

afternoon room,

just a disclaimer, i'm 98% sure i'm in the wrong forum, but your all such helpfull guys i'm sure you can help, that or the mods will move it to the appropriate place.

anyway, I see lots of people with fantastic set ups, that have a xbox1 sat there on the shelf amongst the amps, ps3's and sky boxes, but the list of peoples gear smetimes in the sigs has no mention of xbox's as gaming devices, but refer to them as xbox media centres? what and why? i have spent the past 2 hours searching and looking through my old subscribed threads and can't find anything...... just so i can't be accused of being totally off topic, i am looking at incorperating it in my floating wall design but mounted flat to the wall (but recesed slighty so that the try can open up) thats if there is any point to it other than just asthetics!

as always look forward to your comments

Cheers

Matt.

Re: xbox? media centre? I'm confused.com

Microsoft did have an add on disc for the dear old Xbox which allowed it to connect to a pc running XP Media Center. (it was a bit crap at the best of times)
Then came this XBMC Media Center for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux which is the homebrew version. You either need a chipped Xbox or flash the onboard bios with a linux loader of sorts, (never did that so cant help with that)
My Xbox had a mod chip so I just downloaded a pre compiled version and ftpd XBMC onto the xbox.
t3ch always did the best `builds` and his site is here T3CH XBMC BINARY RELEASES / DOWNLOADS for XBOX, Latest SVN = 2009-06-27 rev21142 : I AIM TO MISBEHAVE (latest build is from may this year)
Its a great os for an other wise forgotten console, have a play and have some fun

Not a problem fella, there are lots of user guides on the net to get you started if you want to have a go at it. Its well worth a play about with. I picked up loads of knowledge about networking and the likes through the use and set up of XBMC. Still have my machine set up in the spare room for guests to use when they stay with us.

Re: xbox? media centre? I'm confused.com

I have a 500GB HDD in one xbox with 230 films on it I'd love to see a Xbox 360 do that!
My other one has a 200GB drive in it but that's been upgraded to a 750GB drive when I get round to it.

I understand that, but could I stream of my PC?, would save me having copies of all my media in every room

yes you can as long as you have xbox/xbox 360 in your home network.

the main differance between the 2 consoles is the xbox360 is a bit of a pain to set up streaming on the pc side of things, also it only offers file view for videos and artist/genre/rating etc view for music, meaning if your music isnt tagged properly its pretty crap.

Re: xbox? media centre? I'm confused.com

streaming with xbmc is as simple as sharing the media folders on your pc and then finding them through xbmc, you then have a choice of scraping your media and using library view (which includes folder jpg and fanart etc also a detailed plot) or a file browser.

streaming with an xbox 360 requires you to add your media into wmp11 library and then setting up your 360 as an extender, details here:

Re: xbox? media centre? I'm confused.com

They are now developing XBMC for the 360 with the recent exploit that was found.
