Howdy Folks

Could someone point me in the right direction (a link would be good - ebuyer or such) of what sort of hard drive i need to purchase for a virgin Xbox i wish to soft mod (just bought Splinter Cell & a memory card with 'stuff' already on it).

I think it's a IDE drive i need, but i'm worried that i'll buy a wrong one!!

Also, could i use a 500GB drive? i've had a quick look through various boards/threads, and some say you can, some say you can't!!

Total spaz with stuff like this, so if someone could point me to some idiot proof guides about installing soft mod & new drive, that would be awesome.

Hello,

You could use any IDE drive thats `Lockable` - you need to have a hard drive that can lock if you intend to use it in a softmodded xbox, check this list :

I recommend a harddrive upto 250gb, its much easier to set up if your new to xbox modding ..... anything over 250gb should be formatted in 32 bit clusters to prevent data corruption, theres programs that will do this for you (xbpartitioner) but your modding experience will become a lot more involved


A quick rundown of whats involved :
Softmod your xbox
Install Chimp as an application
Run Chimp - then hook up your new drive inplace of the DVD Rom
Use chimp to clone the standard HDD to the new
Once cloning has finished, swap the new HDD for old
Reboot and thats it

The process is slightly more complex if your xbox is a v1.6 (you have to Telnet into Chimp) Check the Manufacture date for a rough idea of what version xbox you have.
