Xbox Problem

Hi First of all nice to meet you all been browsing for a few days now and this seems a great forum for all technological enthusiasts as well as norms.

Now i have a small problem, i have a few bits of kit, recently dug out my old xbox (not sure of version will check when i get home) from the back of my wardrobe to softmod and take to my gf's to give her something to do now and then, now when i put it in there it worked fine and dandy, so i hooked it all up to test the other day, went to power on and ms dashboard and an error 28 appears!, done a bit of research on this not enough to conclude a solution though.
My other problem is the power/eject buttons are going crazy, sometimes the power button will power it on sometimes not, when it doesnt the drive eject turns it off and on and then sometimes it'll just stay powered on, Any ideas on this problem?? ....

As far as history its the see through green cased one, it HAS been chipped to play copied games when i first bought it about 5 years ago dont no chip though, is there any way to find that out??..

Cheers Techie

Re: Xbox Problem

Hello,
Will it boot any type of media, either original games or backups ?

The power/eject leds, do they flash red & green ?

Are there any switches for the modchip on the front of the xbox ?

Yes will boot a game i have stored on the hardrive and music to.
They do flash red when the error comes up but not when the power stays on/off ect.

No im afraid not, not quite sure what chip was installed originally, i was only a teen so it wasnt something i needed to know at the time :D

Re: Xbox Problem

Ok, so sometimes it works and at other times it flashes red and green ?

Does the duration of the button press have anything to do with it, if you tap the power button does it frag but if you hold the power it boots up normally ?

(Usually,if its not a dashboard error and it flashes red and green (frag) it would indicate a problem with the bios, you can sometimes hear the harddrive attempt to spin 3 times before it frags, does this happen ?)

Re: Xbox Problem

Ah getting slightly mixed up, the only time the xbox flashes red is when the dashboard error comes up when i try to log into it.
The power issue has never made that happen though, with regards to the power button it doesnt really matter, i tap it or hold it sometimes it'll not turn on at all or turn on then not turn off.

I havent noticed the harddrive spinning up but tbh i havent been listening for it, ill try that tonight and see what happens.

Re: Xbox Problem

Hmmm, im confused.
So, sometimes it boots up to your hacked dashboard, then other times it boots to an error ?

Take it apart and check the chip is seated correctly, if its soldered to the board see if it sits on a pin header, if its a sloderless install make sure all the pogo pins are seated in the LPC port
also
While the xbox is dismantled have a look at the traces on the front of the motherboard, see if you can spot any corrosion, give it a bit of a clean with some alcohol.

Re: Xbox Problem

Nooooooooooooooooo. lol. ONLY when i click on the dashboard does the error come up, no other time, it just means i cant go into the dashboard but its a nuisance and to softmod i need to get in there.

Will do, i planned to take it apart anyway just for research purposes :D.. so i can look at the button to, i dont suppose the buttons could actually be the problem?.

Re: Xbox Problem

Ahhh, I see.

Ok, just re install your dashboard, download Auto Installer Deluxe v4.50 final
: Auto Installer Deluxe - Softmod Installer Deluxe - PSP Installer Deluxe | Official Torrent Tracker

Burn the image to disc, boot your xbox with AID in the drive (it could take 30 seconds to load) then install a dashboard (i recommend UnleashX for simplicity) to the C partition.

You`re still confusing me, lol .... If its chipped why are you wanting to softmod it ?

Re: Xbox Problem

Oh kk. thats a peice of ****** then. :D....

Because im not sure exactly what chip has been used and as far as i can see only allows me to play copied games, nothing more it really does. Softmodding will give me the option to download games ect to it, turn it into a music streamer ect.

Re: Xbox Problem

Hi, All chips do basically the same thing, and they win hands down over softmods, if its chipped i`d stick with it.

Just use the AID disc to install a newer dashboard, then use it to install whatever applications and emulators you fancy. Theres a comprehensive manual that comes with the download that details all options and programs

Re: Xbox Problem

Right Update.........

Ripped the xbox apart (not literally). tested both the button and the mobo, and looks to me its the mobo, as even when i take the button connection out it still comes up and i cant see no corosion broken trails ect nada!!...
On a good note realised ive got the halo version of the xbox.

Next question is it worth repairing?.. i have six weeks off soon so i could go over the mobo, or just buy another, just need convincing its worth it.

:D

Re: Xbox Problem

Hi,
I`d be tempted to try and fix it.

If its a Green console its probably a v1.6 mobo, you can confirm this by having a look at the mobo where the AV connector is and look at the video encoder chip, it should have xcalibur printed on it.
Also, have a look at the underside of the mobo where the chip is soldered in, it should have a LPC rebuild, either about 6 wires or a pre made PCB soldered to various points on the motherboard from the chips pin header.

Again, have a check of the traces on the underside of the front of the board.
Re-flow the solder around the pin header and LPC rebuild.
Try flashing the chip again.
or
buy another xbox and mod it.

You can pick complete xboxes up in CEX for 18 quid.

Ye i will have a go at resoldering the points as where the "Chip" has been soldered to the mobo via wires there a bit skimpy on the solder and some are loose so ill re-do all that, all gunna rip a dashboard onto a disc to sort the error, im sure ill bypass it in some way, ive got to keep my self occupied in some way for the next 6 weeks ... and just modding my car clocks isnt going to do that ...

Thanks again for your help chett will post updates as i go, not sure if ill start it till next week now, at least its in parts now.
