This weekend I'm going to set up an XBox Live account for my son.

Last time I tried this, I messed up so I'd appreciate some guidance to make sure I get it right this time.

My son has had his XBox for 10 months and has been using a non-Live profile.

We want to convert this to a Live profile, so that he retains his acheivements etc.

This is what happened last time.

With his profile logged in, I selected 'sign up to Live' and followed the instructions. When it came to gamertag, it defaulted to his profile name but then announced that this was already in use and prompted us to select another. We did this expecting the Live account to be created and his profile renamed to the gamertag. Instead, his profile was left alone and a totally new profile with the selected gamertag was created - this isn't what we wanted to happen.

So what do I need to do, to ensure that we end up with one profile for both online and offline play and his prior acheivements are retained.

My thoughts are this:

(1) Find a gamertag that isn't being used
(2) Rename his profile to this gamertag
(3) Sign up to live

Is this correct?
