Xbox Live Lag Problem

I bought a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router and the official wireless adaptor for the 360 2 months ago. Every thing has been working fine but several times over the last few weeks I've been getting some serious lag problems (I mainly play Gears Of war online). I've checked my connection settings on the dashboard and have run the test but always have full bars so I'm sure that there is no problem with the connection between console and router - although the "act" yellow light does not always stay lit. I've tried connecting to the router via ethernet cable, so the 360 is wired to the phone line, but have also had lag using this method too. As I tend to play mostly in the evenings and at the weekend, could it be a congestion problem with my ISP? I am currently with Pipex (8mb connection but I know that size doesn't matter ) Some nights it is okay but others it can be a nightmare. I never have my PC on when I'm playing the 360 so that won't interfere with the connection.

Does anybody else have a similar problem (especially would like to hear from Pipex users) or any suggestions - I'm new to this networking game.

Many thanks
Neil

Agree with Kop mate, could be ISP, although I take it you have tried pinging servers etc to see what your speeds are like? What's your download speed like (try McAfee speed test - I've found this gives pretty honest results).

I take it also you have tried resetting your router, sticking the Xbox in the DMZ and all that? (There is a really good guide on here somewhere, might be a sticky, about how to check all this). Finally, if you're with BT you may be able to get them to turn the volume up on your line. This may make things worse though as if you’re slow due to noise etc it will just extenuate the problem.

Are you sure your network is secure and next door are not stealing your broadband? I read about this happening when a guy could also not explain why his speeds were so dam temperamental, turns out next door were helping themselves to his connection and downloading all sorts. You can check the MAC address on the wireless log (most routers should have this).

Hope to see you back on soon anyway.

Re: Xbox Live Lag Problem

From what I've heard Pipex arent all that great anymore. I'm with virgin and to be honest I can't fault them - even with their capping bandwidth policy it doesnt affect my live play even if i'm restricted. And when i'm not being capped on bandwidth i'm downloading at like 480kb/s (average)!

I'm stuck with Pipex for the next 2 months (have had a payment dispute with them over the last 7 months but will be finished by the end of July) and will probably change ISP after that. I know what you mean Viru - It is a shame as I've been with them for over 4 years and never had a problem but since they started their Hoff adverts and new pricing structure their customer service has gone downhill big time IMO

On average 5.5 mb wireless, 6.5 mb wired - ran some speed tests on the PC.

Anyway, I've had a bit of a fiddle, and I've tried a wired connection from the router to the 360 via ethernet again and have been playing GOW for the last hour without lag I then switched to the wireless adaptor, only 5 feet away from the router, and it began lagging again! It appears then that the adaptor is faulty - I've tried it in the front usb ports as well just to make sure the rear usb port wasn't broken but still got lag.

I bought the adaptor from Game and still have the receipt - do you think they will exchange it without checking that it may be faulty first? Especially as I don't know for a fact myself that it is broken.

I don't have any mates Seriously though, none of my mates who are still in Hereford are really into computer games but as I work for the local council we've got an intranet service with a classifieds section. I'll put an advert on there to see if I can borrow somebody's adaptor and in the meantime use the wired connection for now.

Cheers everybody for the help

Average 26ms

Cheers for that - you learn something new every day

O/T how's Paul Parry done for you this season? You've had him now for 3½ years since you bought him from us. Good bit of business for HUFC as we had a clause in the deal where we got £20,000 (I think) if he played 5 times for Wales. Luckily for us he got into the Welsh side pretty quickly after joining the bluebirds.

26ms is pretty good (better than what I get actually) so that shouldn't be the issue. I know using wireless does add to your pin, but I doubt it would cause lag on a pretty decent connection, so it could well be the adapter.

As for parry, he's been pretty good. Hasn't really stood out as a player above the rest, but still, he's a good player, and its nice to have someone like him, who can run at the opposition and get a good shot off, in the team. Hopefully, he'll be in no danger from player cut Jones has been on about, and with some luck, he'll be a premiership player with us soon lol.
