Nope, if you've got 512k that is sufficient. If you want to run two xboxes, go for 1Mb/2Mb.
But after that no, download has no bearing on gaming itself, obviously on other apps downloading like Marketplace, downloading films etc etc, but not on Xbox Live. Xbox Live doesn't use up much traffic to be honest.
Its just "a long way" across the pond, there's nothing you can really do about it, apart from pick games closer to you.
For example (made up figures, just to illustrate) say the host is in the states:-
-- Host
-- Gamer 1 (also in the states, 30ms away)
-- Gamer 2 (also in the states, 40ms away)
-- Gamer 3 (in Canada, 50ms away)
-- Gamer 4 (in the UK, 100ms away)
Say your Gamer 4, you could have the exact same broadband as all of the other games, 10mb or whatever they are using, but your still 100ms away from the host, so your 50ms+ behind on the action. 50 milliseconds doesn't sound a lot, but in gaming is ages, its the different between your bullets hitting him or the wall.
You can't change that 100ms down to 30 or 40, no matter what you do.
