How to set gamertag picture to custom one?

May be it is a stupid question but I havent found way to do so.

When I go to Xbox.com, sign in, Edit Gamer Card - it shows me several predefined pistures. But I see a lot more pictures on others gamertags.

How do you do that guys?

There's a load of pics on the 360 hard drive and you can buy them from the live market place for points. The one's you can't see on xbox.com are probably ones they've bought with their 360 on the live marketplace.

I can't see that happening tbh...as I'm sure the feature would be abused

I dont mind be spoiled a bit. But I think it is just unpractical - if every gamer will upload his own face - servers will be busy to pumping it forth and back. Every time you play with someone your xbox will need to download his scary face! Traffic will be enormous and advantage is very small.

Major Nelson (Xbox Live: Director of Programming) has said in one of his blogcast's that it'll never happen as it's open to, "too much abuse".

To be honest, the bandwidth it would use would be minimal, the real problem is the abust element of it. Always a shame when a mindless few ruin something for the masses really.

I agree about abuse. Half of players will show their knobs

But I wodnt agree abt traffic. Me and my son play around 50 games a day, 6 players. 300 pictures a day * 5 Kb of size * 30 days = 45Meg a month.

Which is not bad for a good broadband.

Now imagine what does that mean for Xbox Live servers. I would have wild guess that there is 300-500 thousands of live users. Let say 250 000 * 45 Mb = 11 Terabyte a month.

Which is expensive even for Microsoft. And world channels are not of rubber. They are limited.

Hold on then, how do they host all of these avatar pictures without needing 11TB p/m?

Because microsoft doesn't handle much of the trade off. It's forwarded to the game creators servers or the game host. Also if you have XBL camera you can take pictures of anything you want and use it as your profile picture, but any abuse means perment ban followed up by bans on your ip and your xbox.

You can use your own pic if its taken with the LIVE vision camera, I think its only viewable to friends though and you have a seperate picture for public.

Xbox Live Vision Camera is the only way to get custom Gamer Pics, but then only friend can see it (I think).
