What can i expect from sky broadband after a move

Hi, my son is an xbox live addict but that's not the problem. We currently have virgin broadband but will soon be moving to an area where virgin is not an option so i wondered what's the next best thing? will he see any dramatic reduction in quality of play if we have sky provide the broadband? Any advice would be appreciated, apologies if this has been covered before.

It all depends in the lines that feed the house. The best thing to do is get the phone number of the house you are buying and contact Sky and ask them what the max connection speed is.

Its likely you won't notice much change. I am on Sky Unlimited and getting around 17Mbs at the mo. I'm not saying you will get the same but the offering is good.

Wont be a problem xbox live will function just fine on even a 0.5mb connection im sure these days you get at least 1mb on even the worth lines (all depends on distance from the exchange)

Ping between ADSL and cable wont be that much different either

I'm on the middle Sky package and get between 6-8mb/s. On average there are 2 laptops and 1 360 connected to my network and I can still use xbox live without a problem. I was also impressed that I could stream a 1080p movie off Zune without any problems when the 2 laptops were logged on too. My house isn't very close (about 2 miles away) to nearest bt exchange so I've been really impressed with Sky broadband for the 2 years it's been running

Big Big Warning for you.

If you choose too take phone line rental + calls and BB from Sky they'll try and put you onto their own voice network.

Upshot is if you want to leave to go to a normal BT line you'll be paying for a new line setup.
You also wont be able to switch your broadband away from them.

One thing you will definalty get with Sky is very bad customer service. It's not that the people you speak to are unhelpfull, it's that they seem to be as confused with Skys script driven systems as we would.

I've just left Sky to go back to O2 (and BT for phone).
They seemed to think that reducing my download allowance by 75% was an 'improvement' due to the fact they opened up the download/upload speeds. They missed the point that when your customers only get 4mb anyway, this isnt a selling point!

Also it took Sky 4 months, and me 12 phone calls for hours on end over weeks and weeks, along with 50 quid in compensation from Sky before they stopped billing me for a telephone line they no longer supplied.

The MAC code I got from them was wrong, and that took 12 phone calls, for hours on end before finally giving up and sending them a threatening letter.

Personally, if you have an O2 mobile, go with them for 8 quid a month.
