XBox Live problem (cannot find IP)

Hey all,

I bought an XBox 360 last week and haven't yet bought a wireless dongle thingy so I'm running it straight through an ethernet lead connected to my router.

For the first week it was working fine but now all of a sudden it won't connect to XBox Live. It's saying it cannot find the IP address.

I've tested the ethernet lead and it's all fine - it connects up with my laptop no problem.

I've spoken to a friend and he had exactly the same problem but doesn't use his XBox much so never got it online - can anyone help?

If it helps, I'm on Be Broadband and my internet connection seems fine...

Re: XBox Live problem (cannot find IP)

try assigning a static IP to your Xbox and make sure your router has that same IP enabled in the DMZ settings on the router's online utility

Re: XBox Live problem (cannot find IP)

Before you start changing things, what IP address is the Xbox being assigned? This should be visible when you go into the System Settings->Network Settings from the dashboard.

If the Xbox has a 169.x.x.x address then it isn't being allocated an IP address from your router. If that's the case then I would suggest turning the xbox off, rebooting the router, checking internet connectivity from your PC and then turning the Xbox on.

Re: XBox Live problem (cannot find IP)

Thanks both of you.

dmaidmen: it does have an IP with 169.x.x.x so I followed your steps and it hasn't worked.

I just checked my be broadband account and it says Static IP, so this is the problem I'm guessing! Apologies for my stupidity, but how do I find out the IP? It doesn't say on the be website.

By the way I'm on a Mac.

Thanks again guys

Re: XBox Live problem (cannot find IP)

If your broadband account has a static IP then providing you haven't manually assigned this to your Mac or another device; the router should happily manage this for you. Your router will be using your public static IP address on the internet and will route traffic to the correct device on your private network (probably 192.168.1.x) accordingly.

You really shouldn't need to change anything on your router/xbox to get this to work especially as you said it worked fine for a week. It looks like BE use the Thomson routers so you probably have a 585v7 ?

Have you manually assigned an IP address to your Mac? If you check its IP address it should be 192.168.1.x where x is number between 1 and 254.

When you check the IP address there should also be an entry for the default gateway. This is the IP address of your router and if you browse to it http://192.168.1.254 for instance it will give you some information about what's connected to your network.
