Downloading effecting Xbox Live

Right, I have ADSL2+ with o2 which i have a consistent 15mb sync rate.

I can download at a top speed of 1.5meg a sec which i feel is very good.

My stepson is on Xbox live (COD MW) though as soon i get on the web he moans about lagging. If i start downloading something you think the world had ended.

Question is, is this a fault, surely the bandwidth required for XB Live can run parallel with my downloading - is there anyway to set the bandwidth allowance for each connection?

Personally I couldn't care less but if i hear 'John, are you downloading again', then the stomp as he comes down stairs and sits there sulking....i'm chucking his xbox out the window.

You will make a 13yr old very happy if you xcan help here.

Re: Downloading effecting Xbox Live

If you hog all the bandwidth by downloading stuff to the PC at the max speed possible by your line, then of course he'll have problems connecting to xbox live. You haven't said though if this is just occasional downloading of files, or if you're downloading large files at constant speeds (torrents for example).

If you are downloading at full whack, you'll have to manually limit the down speed so his xbox isn't having to fight for bandwidth. This is easy to do with any torrent software, but if it's other files (say just stuff downloaded directly off a website) then I'm not sure how you'd control that. I believe there are free programmes out there that can measure bandwidth, but I'm not sure about controlling it.

Also, upload is another thing you have to watch out for. If you upload at the absolute max. your line can handle, the download speed will drop way down. It's worth limiting your upload to something just below your limit if you're downloading uploading simultaneously. Again this may relate more to torrenting.

P.S - Some people would probably do a lot worse than moan if you messed with their xbox live...

Yeah from my experience in a house with 4 pc's and a 360/ps3 running at times it's the Uploading that hampers connection and download has little affect. Limit upload to a small number and issues will dissapear.

Re: Downloading effecting Xbox Live

It's not uploading as I don't use torrents that much anymore. I've found a site to download directly from...even when i'm downloading at 350kb he'll complain about lag.

Might just cut his xbox live off, that'll stop the moaning

Thoug even just browsing the web, you can tell when he's online playing....

May not just be your connection then, if he's got lag could be another hosts problems and certainly a download at 350kb/s shouldnt have any affect for him.
Most nights we got 3 pcs online in web and such and is fine for me.
just see how it goes, Hows your connection anyway? post up a result from speedtest.

Re: Downloading effecting Xbox Live

it's always gonna affect it cuz the router has the extra strain of another device interacting with it

Re: Downloading effecting Xbox Live

Cool very decent speeds and ping is good. My connection is less than half all that average with ping of 120 and i have little probs.
Reckon the times that he moans it could be other hosts as a weeny odd download wont be affecting it.
Ive had downloads at 500kb's and other pc's on with little effect.
That said different games/different hosts etc etc will get different results,
as a test dont download for a week and see if he still moans (dont tell him tho )

Oh and modern warfare is common for odd lag anyway from what ive read recently. So wouldnt worry.

Re: Downloading effecting Xbox Live

Right now noticed that when he's online my PS3 lags...while his doesn't.

Is there anyway to order the priority bandwidth is assigned...so my devices get the priority over his xbox???
