Hosting A Gaming Tournament for over 200 People! Help & Advice needed!

OK,

It appears to have gotten back to the Leader of The Council that I like playing Games. but unfortunatly like all good things there is a bad side

He and a few select High Ranking individuals of Torfaen County Borough Council have decided that I would be the best person to Oversee a Gaming Tournamant in our County! and stupidly I sat there and said YES I COULD DO IT!

So what I know so far....

over 200 Children (Age Range Unknown as Yet) will be coming to Torfaen in the Later End of 2009 in conjunction with some Twin Town Scheme, So all the towns across the world that are twined with towns in Torfaen.

The Council Wants to hold a Gaming Tournamant on Xbox 360's and My Boss the Head of ICT has said that M$ have already shown interested in helping us out by borrowing us all the kit required to hold such an event Including 30 Kiosks that we can keep in Torfaen for the forseeable future in our Leisure Centre's etc etc This was no surprise as they already send us games and console's annually but due to some laws with Government and Free stuff it all goes into the Mayor's Charity Raffle for Xmas

So I got 1 Year to get this setup but no Clue about how a Tournament Structure is layed out or Played. Ive got the Kit, Games and Venue. Ive got 200 participents coming from all over the world but NO Program!

Any Thoughts or guidence on Tournament Play Structure would be appreciated

Re: Hosting A Gaming Tournament for over 200 People! Help & Advice needed!

Ok, been checking out some sites for Idea's:

http://www.allpro-gamers.com/
http://www.consoles.net/
http://gamebattles.com/
http://www.xbox-leagues.com/

Based on Games available Now or very Soon so that when the time comes the players will feel familier with the game I am liking the following.....

GRID:Race Driver

All Races to be set to 3 laps long, Damage is to be left off, Catch up is to be left off and Driver assists to be left on.

Race's will be run as single individuals up to 8 players per race in the starting Heats. The same track will be used for all players in the Starting Heats. Then the tracks will altar through progression, the Hardest track's being used for the Quarter, Semi's and Final. As to how many people progress through a heat will be decided in finer detail when I know numbers of Participants.

PGR 4 or maybe 5 who knows

Time Trials, Single Participants, Same Track and Car for all (Best Track and car?) best of 10 Laps. Nice little gap filler this one.

Fifa 09

2 vs. 2 or maybe 4 vs. 4. 1 Day World Cup Knockout Tournament, Teams and match ups picked from a Hat. 5 min team Prep time, 5 min a Half.

Guitar Hero 3

Pre-Selected Range of Tracks on Same Difficulty, maybe Single player Single Track and Highest Scores as a gap filler or Head to head in rounds as a knockout tournament.

Street Fighter IV

Head to head best of 3, Played as a Knockout Tournament. There might be excluded Characters but until I play the game I cannot say. Same Characters will be allowed. Hopefully I can get Arcade Sticks for this.

Halo 3

SO MANY OPTIONS for this. Depending on whether we do Single Player or Teams will determine Points or Knockout. I am thinking best of 3 rounds over 3 maps. One 10 minute round per map.

Gears of War will be out of the question as they will all be under 18 years old, Halo only just about squeezes through!

Any Thoughts?

Wow this seems to be a great plan mate

I will need to have a look and see what idea's I could help you with but I will get back to you on this one

Also I would like to do something similar where I live in London but the chances of getting the council to back it are very unlikely

Do you run a leisure centre or did you contact them to help host the event?

And are you putting up prizes for the winners of the tournaments?

But some early advice would be to watch the age rating on the games - Been a big subject for debate in countries from America to the UK

If you could secure 2 Rock Band sets you can have band face off’s or battle of the bands

Score will determine the winner as well as crowd reaction to how well the band actually performed together and you could have the final on "Stage" with all watching before hometime

Is it going to matter that in August 09 most of the games you have listed will be old news ? I mean from a marketing point of view you will want to be seen as featuring all the newest games. Rockband 2 & Guitar Hero 4 should be well established by then.

The whole thing is being put on by the Council mate, I work in the ICT Department and its common knowledge that I like to game so hence the Head of ICT volunteered me to the Leader of the Council as the man in the know

We have got a meeting coming up with Microsfot about the kit next month and as for games that i have listed and what we will actually use come next year will probrably be upto M$

Try watching Pulse on Sky channel 197. There's gaming tornaments on there, you might get some ideas.

Also, you need to consider the game's age restriction. Seems like it's going to be kids so bigger boy games are out Official COD games are 16+ only, much to my 8 year old son's dissappointment!
Be careful of getting sued by the parents of young children that see unsuitable content and hear bad language from competitors.

Problem is there's a limited number of games on XBox 360 that are rated 3+ and popular.

Are you going to ask them to bring there own profiles on MUs and HDD? Or are you going to create them a new profile on the machine before they compete? Or you could create generic gamertags such as Gamer1, Gamer2 Gamer3... on each machine.

Regards

Simon
