360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
I have plenty of wmv and MPEG videos burnt onto disc from my PC. For some reason, I thought my 360 would play them but nothing happens when I put them into the console. It picks up any JPEG files I have on the discs, but none of the videos.
Am I expecting too much from my 360 or is there a way to get the vids to play?

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
Make sure your console is UP TO DATE with the latest firmware. Also take into account that the codecs used within the MPEG2/WMV containers have to be 360 comaptiable. Refer to 360's website for a list of compatiable codecs.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
God, why does everything have to be like a maths lesson?! If it doesn't do what I want it to frst off, it's not worth the hassle.
I have no idea if it's UP TO DATE (why you shout so loud?). But if it involves hooking up to the internet, forget it.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
Sorry for trying to help lol.
EDIT: I just could not help myself lol. This linkg refers to everything with regards to video for the Xbox 360
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/u...aybackfaq.aspx
Bear in mind there is also a new dashboard for the Xbox 360 and what not. Updating it would be worth its while as it even supports Divx now.

Updating the 360 is pretty much an essential thing, not only does it add features and fix bugs but the new NXE is a complete make over and a must for ever 360 owner.
Also, its worth mentioning that the 360 doesnt support MPEG1 or MPEG2 files at present.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
Sephiroth, sorry for biting your head off there, fella! It's not very easy for me to get my 360 online, unfortunately. We got hold of a wireless router yesterday as my missus as just bought a laptop and getting her online was very easy and hassle-free. However, not so straightforward with my 360 as we only have one connection point for the modem and that's in the other room (hmm, that said, if I could get Virgin to put a conection point in the living room, I could hook the 360 up to the modem no problem, going by the handbook anyway).
The other possibility that's occured (although it isn't covered in the handbook) is using the wife's laptop. It's wireless enabled and she receives her internet connection via a wireless router which is connected to the modem in the other room as I say. Would I be able to link the 360 to the laptop via an ethernet cable and get access to Xbox Live that way...or am I hopelessly clutching at so many straws here?

It will work fine just share the wireless connection in network connection, tick allow other computers to use this connection and plug in the ethernet cable between you laptop and xbox run the xbox live tests on your xbox and it should work fine.
Only down side is the laptop has to be on for you to connect to live.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
Thanks; there must be more to it than that because I've gone into Network Settings and ticked allow other users to share this connection but when I test media connection on the 360 I get "failed" when it tests the IP address.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
I thought the whole idea of a router was to handle more than one connection
= i only have my PC so i dont need/have a router at all (just plugs direct into modem)
= if the router is wireless dont you just need a wireless nic for the xbox?
or there is probably a strd network port on the router where you could use home plugs for the xbox (seems to be popular solution)
.

I have heard of these 'homeplugs' and have been interested in the past. Well until I saw the price that was.

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
If connecting the 360 to the internet is a no no then run the update via CD. If you go to 360's website you can download the latest update and burn via CD-R/RW. The run it on the 360 and you're home free

Re: 360 doesn't recognise wmv/MPEG files
Thanks, Sephiroth; I wondered if that would be a possibility.
Happily, shortly after posting last night, I got connected. My clock is now correct (hurrah!) and I could watch wmv files. I'm not sure what I'll get out of Xbox Live, though, as I'm not into playing online, but I'm sure there will be other advantages to Xbox Live.
One thing that does concern me, though, is this whole business of allowing other computers to use this connection. I know it's the first thing my wife will ask me (as it's her laptop) so how safe is this or am I worrying needlessly?
