Do I need 100hz scanning / 24fps ? please advise

Afternoon all, just in the process of trying to work out what TV to buy. All the 'stats' are driving me up the wall!!

Do I need 100hz scanning for xbox hd gaming?

Do I need 24fps for xbox hd gaming?

Sorry I know these are noob questions but I havnt got a scooby to be honest.

If I did get a HD TV that does both of the things listed above what benefit would it give me?

Thanks for listening, look forward to your advice

cheers

Jordan

You don't 'need' any of those for HD gaming - any HD Ready set will be fine.

I'm sure someone else here will be able to confirm this, but as far as I know only Blu-ray disks/players offer playback of 24fps video. So for an xbox 360 this has no function or use.

Re: Do I need 100hz scanning / 24fps ? please advise

I'm really not the most knowledgable person about TV's but....

24fps playback is for movies.

100Hz is available for LCD TV's however it was mainly for CRT's IIRC.

Main things to look for is depending on the size, 720p/1080p - Rule of thumb is sub 40" 720p, 40" + 1080p.

A decent contrast ratio = better black levels and colours

HDMI port if possible although VGA/Component look pretty much the same in a lot of scenarios.

That's the basics of it although as with anything the more you look the more you'll find.

Your best bet would be to state what size TV your after and your budget and post it in the LCD section.

Personally I recommend the Samsung le32a457. Get's very good reviews (class leader on a budget) and can be had for as little as £350 which is excellent for a branded 32" TV, very good specs and it looks the part as well. I'm sure most people would recommend this or a Sony (KVL series IIRC) as they don't suffer from motion blur that plague a lot of cheaper HD LCD's.

Chris.

Re: Do I need 100hz scanning / 24fps ? please advise

Correct. 24fps is VERY useful if you are getting a Playstation 3 or Blu Ray DVD player to use with the telly. Which you probably will in the future, so that IS a plus, but not with the Xbox360.

100Hz is a bonus for watching football and sports on telly, apart from that it's not much use for anytthing else. In fact, it will probably make your xbox360 playing experience slightly WORSE! Cos it needs extra processing, you will get what's called input lag/slight delay during games, we're talking hardly noticeable, but noticeable enough for some esp on Multiplayer games like Call of Duty, etc.

HOWEVER, and it's a big HOWEVER!!! You simply turn this off in your tv menu when playing the xbox! If you can!

So, if you can turn 100Hz off, I'd still go with it mate. It won't improve your xbox experience, though, as far as I knowl.

I have the Samsung LE40A686 which has both 24fps and 100Hz, the frequency thing is switched off most of the time, automatically so for Xbox as I am connected through VGA and it is not an option on that input.

Re: Do I need 100hz scanning / 24fps ? please advise

StevieBuck, Chrisoldinho & Dongatom thanks for your advice chaps much appreciated.

Ok so as the 100hz thing isnt so important I've narrowed it down to either . . .

this 42" Tosh - Buy TOSHIBA 42XV555DB | Digital 42" 1080p hd ready lcd tv - Televisions | Comet

Or this Sony 40" which is a tad more expensive
Sony KDL40V4000 / KDL-40V4000 Review

They're both 1080p but the tosh doesnt do 100hz

I would look at the Samsung 42" but I've heard they have probs with input lag for gaming whatever that is?

I mainly play fast paced games like COD4 / COD5, in fact 99% of gaming will most prob be COD 4 due to the fact I'm addicted to my MP5 and have clocked up nearly 12 days playing time online, which is worrying aint it!!

I would go for the best one you can afford mate. Theres some good advice above. For example, I've got the Sony W4500 and that has a game mode that switches off the 100hz option so you don't get any lag while you're gaming.

If you want a future proof (if there is such a thing) tv then 100hz and 24p is a must for me (especially if you're going to get a blu ray player any time soon).

You might get some better advice over here.

Not sure there is an owners thread for the Toshiba mate.

Easy Richfell,

thanks for your advice mate, think I'll do what u said and buy the Sony I posted. It's got good reviews generally and the fact it does 1080p, 100hz and 24fps will ensure the fact I wont have to upgrade for a couple of years.

Just need to check it has no issues with input lag as this TV will be mostly used for watching flags playing Domination on COD4!!

Nice one for the help tho chaps it's much appreciated

I tried cutting and pasting codes from mygamertag.net but it keeps saying 'file invalid' when I go to submit in the control panel.

Thanks for your help so far as well

You can't really go wrong with the Sony KDL-40L4000:

KDL-40L4000 (KDL40L4000) : TV and projectors : Sony

Very impressed for the money. 1080/24p, easy to set up, concise manual, great picture and features, good panel, and lots of user controllable settings. My Samsung LE32R41BD was £680 in 2006 with 25% discount so this Sony is great value for money at £587 in Sainsbury's.

Just thought i'd add to this discussion a link to a site i use when buying tv's, might be more useful for some of you guys as living in NI not a lot of the very best priced deals deliver here.

Cheapest LCD TV prices compared online

Also, i have the Samsung 40" 6series and it's smoking hot ! The picture from my Xbox is outstanding and even the picture from my Sky+ (scart connection) is really outstanding.

Good luck with whichever option you go for

They are both great to have, 100hz is meant to reduce motion blur(although I am sure it is actually making it worse), but as most 360 games are 60hz then us UK gamers get screwed over because we get 100hz and not 120hz.

If you want to get the best TV you can get both, but neither 24p or 100hz improves games.

Re: Do I need 100hz scanning / 24fps ? please advise

i would say the 37lg7000 would be the best tv for fps like call of duty 4 and call of duty world at war... so far i have tested about 10tv's in currys and comet my way on these games... including toshiba regza, samsung 5-6-7 series and sharp and another lg... i then tryed the 37lg7000 which is 1080p just like the others i tired but the quality of this screen compared to the rest!!!! damn it was such a difference!! so much clearer no blurs when playing the game what so ever no patchy colours no ghosting really smooth! this screen also has 100hz i am not sure if you can turn it off or not but it is not a problem while gaming on the xbox 360 because it only users 60hz anyway! (from what i gather)

I have both my 360 and PS3 running through a Samsung LE46A656, it has both 100hz and 24p but neither are useable with the 360.
Only blu-ray currently outputs at 24fps and the 100hz (on any tv) causes terrible motion blur, the TV produces amazing visuals but to answer your question directly, no you do not need 100hz and/or 24p.

Have you considered getting a PJ? I know it may not initially fit the bill but when you can get a 1080p, 24fps 1:1 mapped picture beamed on to 80" screen you get the picture.

My brother has one and it looks the bees ********!

Not to everyone's requirements, tastes and what not but when you can pick up a decent PJ and a blind for as little at £500 surely it's worth considering!

Mate I would consider it but what about bulb life? I've heard projectors have bulb lifes upto 1000 hours , after that replacing them costs more then the projector itself!!

can u please post me a link to what your talking about if possible

I'm jealous!!! Can't afford that one tbh, I've set a budget of £600 ish

quite liking this Toshiba Toshiba 42XV555 DB - 42" Widescreen 1080P Full HD LCD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Seems sweet for the price

and quite liking this Sony, SONY KDL40V4000U at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

Unsure if the Sony is 100hz tho cant find any tec specs to say either way

Not sure what to go for, as said mainly for xbox gaming.

Thanks for your help so far people much appreciated
