Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

It is indeed a complete overhaul. I think the interface itself looks very clean and a biiiig step up from the system we have now. It needed doing. I think it's too early to tell if it's more or less intuitive until we actually see how it works, no way to judge yet. I think the 8 player party system is a great selling point for Live in the future though.

Am I the only person who doesn't mind the avatar system? Seems a bit more personal to me, though I know it'll upset the hardcore crowd (which is a bonus in itself ).

I think it looks better than the Sony xmb. As munkey said though until we try it for ourselves we won't know how it is to use.

As long as the avatars' clothes follow this season's clothes. I would hate to be dressed all 2007.

It'd be good to have a Forza editing mode for the clothes, I don't normally do green Polo shirts.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Only quickly looked at the pics on engadget but am I right in thinking it looks like the navigation is like Apple's coverflow?

I think its nice though, didn't like the blades at all.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Apparently, if you don't want an Avatar then you can use your gamer picture in it's place but of course, m$ will be pushing for everyone to use Avatars

Appart from them, i really like the new menu system. Certainly puts the PS3 XMB and OS so shame. We can even do 1 on 1 cross game voice chat while 360 will be able to do 8 way voice chat

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Awful.

I will be dreaming of using the current Dashboard in 12months time when my stupid avatar starts asking me "It looks like you are trying to play a game, do you want me to help you?"

The new games library is good, but they could have added that to the blade system.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

First impressions are i dont hate it, looks pretty slick and all the funtionality coming with it is very nice.

All i could think when looking at the new interface was "Coverflow!?"

TBH going into E3 it seemed like MS we just copying Ninty & Sonys ideas, i was so glad they didnt release a motion controller similar to the Wiimote, avatars was a bit cringeworthy but its a take it or leave it thing.

However they managed to come out the other end ok, they seemed to get through it with thier identity intact.

I've spent a whopping 100 points on gamerpics but still hope they don't get completely abandoned. Would be nice if you could use them as designs on t-shirts for your avatars.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

I think it's an improvement if only because there is a distinct lack of advertising on the new interface. Whether that remains the case by the time we see this go live is another question entirely though.

Anything is an improvement on the current dashboard imo. The last redesign gave away even more screen space to adverts, and it's been an eyesore ever since. I'm hoping this re-design keeps it's clean & uncluttered appearance all the way to launch.

As for Miis, erm Avatars, I couldn't care less if I tried. Expect to see your favourite club's football strip available to buy with FIFA 09 for 250MSP, or being able to dress your Mii up as Ryu, Shepherd, Master Chief etc. for a similar fee.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Despite not being crazy on the avatars, I think the new dashboard looks quite slick, and it definitely screams coverflow......the current system is pretty poor, and as durera says, has far too many chunks of the screen taken up with advertising.........

Any news when we can expect this 'update'??

I have to agree with the 'childish' comment, doesn't really appeal to me from these initial screenshots

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Looks a lot more slick than the current blades, also the blades still exist within the new dash.
As for childish, the only bit that looks vaguely childish are the avatars, which don't bother me at all. As long as you can launch a game quickly and message/chat is easy to get to in an instant - which it is, I really can't see where any complaints can come from.

Looks rushed to me, I dout that will be the final product. though I like the idea and hopefully they will incorporate lovefilm as they have Netflix.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Not keen.

Infact I hate it. The blades were fine to me. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

As the above poster said, I hope this is optional.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

exactly. even though ms probably felt they had done all they could on the blades dashboard, i would have much prefered an update to that (maybe looking a bit slicker) rather than an entire new one. as much as i like the coverflow media viewer style (i have it on my media pc and my phone) im not sure how i would feel about it being on the 360. i know its not the same as apple coverflow, but for the sake of argument it seems like it will be a similar way of navigating. obviously far too early to tell how it will play out yet.

will be interesting to see how themes look on it. apparently all the themes we've bought will look 'even better'

it would be pretty special to be able to dress up and avatar once you 100% a games achievements. ie 1000 on cod4 gets you a swat style clothing, or soemthing. would add a bit to the achievements side of things.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

Based on previous update experience I'm dreading this. I mean, when they make these tiny alterations to the system it seems to slow everything down for days or weeks, games get laggy, you cannot get in. With an over haul like this I cannot even begin to imagine the state live is going to be in when it happens

The avatars have to go IMO, this isn't the wii where my kids muck about with their mii's all the time. I'll be sticking to my gamer pic.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

I think the avatars are optional, but the operating system isn't. No idea why the negativity on the dash, it's a massive improvement in my book - like a DVD rack you can flick through.

Re: E3: new dashboard - thoughts?

I think it's the Childish element to it that I'm not happy with. Miis are great on the Wii but I'd rather have a more grown-up experience on the 360.

For me the current dashboard is perfectly fine in terms of design and functionality.

But that's what I mean - the avatars are intially being reported as optional. I can understand why people don't like that (even though I do, nothing wrong with a bit of fun personalisation) but that's different to the dashboard.
