Converting MKV with ac3 to avi anyone done this?

I have found this link http://anime.nickistre.net/blog_entr...dec_conversion

But when i use virtualdubmod i get an access error when i try to convert the file even though is opens it fine initially. I had the same issue in alltoavi as well rather odd. I may have to work out the best codec options or something but i have not used windows for so long i can't remember the best way to set them all up. When i used avidemux the output would not play on the 360.

I used Videoraon an MKV file and it worked flawlessly without needing to know anything even remotely technical. Converted it to mp4 though.

Theres an "advanced" option to set the number of cores you want it to use. My 2.4ghz quad core converted a 43 min long 1.2GB HD file in around 35 mins

what error do u get?

personally i would uninstall all your codecs - i believe there is also a program which can uninstall codecs too

then reinstall community codec pack and xvid and try again

i've tested using virtualdub and it works fine although for my machine its a little slow

i.e for 1min of video it took 4 mins to convert but i was able to keep 5.1 sound and very high quality video

hahaha zoomplayer!!

crazy

i use zoom player - fantastic player but i hate the whole "WARNING - PLEASE INSTALL CODECS NOW" - it asks you to install like 12 extra codecs! - none of which are really needed :-)

install zoom player again without the codecs it sometimes asks for - it works fine still :-)

ok got this working now sort of, i reinstalled codecs and xvid etc. What did you do with the fps setting in avc2avi? if i do a -f 23,976 (NTSC film i think) the resulting avi runs at lightening speed. Or have i got something wrong?

i dont touch the frame rate in av2avi

i change the framerate in virtualdub only

and virtualdub does always show the framerate im expecting so i know its right.

i just use avc2avi to do just that - avc 2 avi - no other changes

do what i did mate - test using samples first to make sure it works.

i've very happy with the end results of my converted file

Re: Converting MKV with ac3 to avi anyone done this?

i will try that but avc2avi is auto setting to 25000 fps which is not the same as source , and when i convert leaving the frame rate alone in vdubmod it is out of sync with audio..

do u not change the framereate in virtualdub?

there is an option to change the framerate

u dont need to change it in avc2avi because u can do it at once with virtualdub - video menu - then frame rate - (change video and audio to match suggested )

Re: Converting MKV with ac3 to avi anyone done this?

UPDATE:

i thought ill test this method doing an whole HD FILM from the mkv format to avi

I can 100% confirm that the file works on the 360 without any issues

final file size was 5.5gb (smaller than the original source file)
converting time was about 5hrs/6hrs approx

using the xvid codec and 5.1 ac3 audio

Yeah works really well this guide, i use a 4000 bitrate at single pass keeping the resolution as hd and works a treat. Size is not much bigger that the original and the whole preocess does not take long. I would say quality is just as good as original.

generally i just use a higher bitrate to the original file bitrate

i think when you select a bitrate with the xvid encoder it uses this as the floating average.

So my original movie was 5403 or something i selected 5693 and the final bitrate was about 5302 average
