the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

ok,i have been watching the release of the elite quite closely and was very tempted to get an import.i held off to see what people had to say about it and to see if the have put that huge brick of a power supply inside (i already have enough cable etc outside the av rack) and if these new consoles would be quieter.from what i have read on the net the power supply is still external, there not quieter or if they are it isnt by much,it still doesnt have inbuilt wifi and its £330 with no games.sweet jesus thats only £70 less than a ps3 with a hd player and wifi built in.add to that you have the premiums with hdmi output being built in to them now (well in america atleast) so apart from the hard drive, heatsink and the colouris there really that much to shout about with these elites ? because at the £300 plus price mark thats just to close to ps3 territory and you do seem to get a hell of a lot more in the 3.

£279 here for me, for an Elite. Which is a bargain 120gig hard disk, HDMI, lovely black colouration, and a good high % of all exclusive titles, add on to that Xbox Live........PS3 hasnt got a leg to stand on just now. PS3 is still £425....and they still dont have any titles id buy gaming wise that you cant get on the 360.

Re: the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

Just comparing the Elite to a PS3 on price is silly. Xbox 360 has loads of games and many of them are very high quality with more on the way. PS3 has no amazing games, maybe a couple, but THATs it and the thing has been out for nearly a year. Plus GTA4 has more content for Xbox 360, something Sony obviously didn't feel like sorting out for them. I'm not bashing sony at all, the PS3 hardware is impressive, but there's no games.

But, you obviously don't give a toss about the games and are more concerned with 'just owning a next gen console' by the sounds of it.

why is it "silly" ? there getting closer on rrp and there both next gen consoles.or is it because on price and hardware the 360 is on its arse ? no wifi no inbuilt hd player.dont get me wrong i love my 360 (noisy as hell and is prone to die taken into consideration) but what i would have liked MS to do was push the boundarys a bit more than they have done with the "elite" thats all.hide the brick and give us wifi built in.the new heatsink is very welcome as is the big hard drive (i bet you are service wont be anywhere near the yanks though for hd material )and yes the 360 games catalogue is pretty sweet (i cant think of one ps3 title i want to play btw) but with the price hike i would have wanted more than we got.plus its still lucky dip on which drive you get and the noise issue is still a problem with 360`s (the ps3 might not have any games but christ its quiet atleast for watching a film lol ) and i do give a toss about the games

Hi SILVERBACK

In response to your original post, I believe you did not mention the new "Heatsink" that I believe will be shipped with the Elites. What hopefully should result in a more reliable system. This, aswell as the Hard Drive / HDMI / Black Finish has got me sold, hehe. Bring on Friday!

Edit: Just to confirm, the Power Supply is external, or so it was with the American addition. The source was from a Youtube video that showed a CNET Member "Unpacking the Elite".

Regards,

Larnica

If it was internal , they would have even more heat issues than they do now.

Re: the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

i agree about the heat issue worsening if it was inside but the console has been out for how long ? surely they could do something about it by now? fair enough, they where out the traps first and that has given MS a hell of a head start and at the expense of (imho) quality control. there consoles are iffy with the old red ring situation but i would have hoped there 3rd version of the hardware would have included that power supply being tucked awayand inbuilt wifi.

Re: the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

All machines will end up with cooler 65nm chips/additional heatsinks and HDMI so the elite will just give you 120GB drive and obviously it's black.

I think eventually they will do away with the core and just have two identical white machines (both with HDMI), but one with 20Gb, the other with 120.

Microsoft will be making a big mistake if they think the elite will sell well at £330.

Needs to be well south of £300 before i dip my toe in.

A friend works at Dixons, at they are getting an "update" 2 days before the release.

If im correct the £330 price has not been confirmed by Microsoft, but made by Play.com, similar to the price they created for the PS3.

Re: the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

Hmm, £300 would be nice.

Then retailers would add a game/joypad for free.

Could be tempting - just the need to wait for 65nm.

Are there going to be 2 versions of the Elite then?

The 1st version which is due on 24 August.
And an updated version with new chips/heatsink at some point in the future?

Has that been confirmed or is it a rumour?

Re: the elite,do i have this right and why bother if so?

Interesting thread.

The PS3 against Xbox 360 debate is a frenzied one, but with the 'optional' costs of WiFi and High Definition film capability on the Xbox 360 and the £279.99 + 2 games deals regularly available on the high street - it competes incrediblely well on a financial playing field. In essence the cost of the Premium machine is only £200.

By bringing out an Elite, which as its new is less likely (for a few months at least) be sold with the 2 'free' games pacakges, Microsoft is significantly reducing the percieved financial difference between the 2 machines.

The difference between the Premium and PS3 (if you accept the £200 'console only cost' of the high street deals) is £225. OK you don't get wifi and HD-DVD, but you can if you want, and for less than the £225 difference.

However the Elite, simply highlights failings of the 360 (HDMI + HDD size) in comparison to the PS3, and doesn't address the bigger ones (wifi + BR/HD-DVD), and reduces the price difference to less than £100.

I am not sure what 'deals' the PS3 has on the highstreet, so perhaps I the differences are less than I quote here, but nonetheless, the Elite seems a really odd marketing decision for me.

A better strategy for me would to have been stopped the core, drop the Premium to Core Price and bring the Elite in at the Premium cost.

is there nothing you cant find on you tube ? well apart from SONY stuff that they have taken down as soon as its up.love those new heatsinks but seriously thats quite dissapointing.i know its only one console but the console still isnt quite there is it,even 3 generations and 2 years later its either a console which is prone to breakdown but has a great games catalogue or a console thats rock solid and has nowt worth having thanks the lord for that extended warranty eh.i wonder if MS just cant fix the 3 rod and have just conceeded the fact with the warranty offer?

I said in another thread ages ago that it would be stupid for them to drop the price in every country and not do one for Europe. The prices in the link also seem right.

All the game stores are still saying that £330 is not the official price. £300 is a good price and come Friday i can see stores doing maybe an Elite with Bioshock for £330.

Anyway, it all sounds good to me

Microsoft need to clear out the 95nm models first, without a dought 6 months from now they will all be 65nm.

Of course, Christmas is a good time to offload stock.

Halo 3 being another!

Back on topic, I also remembering saying in another thread, I really think MS missed a trick with not somehow incorporating the elite with a HD DVD player.

The PS3 big selling point is that it comes with Blu-ray. Just think how much better MS would do against the PS3 if they could offer a one box solution for a high spec Xbox360 complete with HD DVD inbuilt.
