is there any way i can get it to work on my laptop?

it has a VGA port on the back but there must be a way to switch from the laptop view to the 360?

I think VGA sockets on laptops are only there for outputing to a larger screen, although i may be wrong

That is correct. Laptop VGA connections are for output only to an external display.
