VGA Resolution Question?

Having had my 360 connected via component and Wii via Scart for the last 12mths I was advised to get a VGA cable for the 360 and component for the Wii ( I have a Panasonic PX60 TV).........Wow! the difference is great, so much more detail.

My question is this, there are so many Screen Resolutions to choose from 1920x1080, 1369x768, 1280x1024 and so on, which is the best for me? Help also Reference Level......I assume that this should be Expanded?

Also, just played RE4 on the Wii and it's chopped about 10% off the sides of the screen, is that right?

Cheers

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

Not that im an expert but i think you should set it to whatever resolution your telly is best at. I have it set to 1369x768 on my toshiba 323030d but if your telly can do full HD then you go for the 1920x1080. I think the reference level brightens up the colours because there was people complaining of washed out colours using the VGA. I think its just a personal preference though.

Only started using a VGA cable this week and im well chuffed with the results. Rainbow six vegas and the bioshock demo looks awesome. Also tried it with a couple of DVDs to see what it looks like upscaling and pretty impressed with those aswell because from what im led to believe its only through using the VGA cable that the 360 will upscale dvds

Trial and error, try them all, whatever one you like the best, use. No need to ask others...

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

Best option is probably the native resolution of your TV.

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

Cheers. Just understood that the resolution figures are what best fits the screen! Doh!

For some reason though I was just watching a HD DVD in 2:35:1 (I dont like the black lines top and bottom) and tried to adjust to Zoom1using the Aspect button on the Panny and it wont let me, is there a setting that I have to adjust?

Does your DVD player have the option to zoom it in? I don't mind black bars, I watch it as its intended.

Yes the VGA cable does support 1080p unlike the component cable.

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

Another question, why do I now have to have my surround sound on to hear something? I've put the red & white audio cables in next to the VGA and dont get any sound through the TV?

Also i cant seem to Zoom in with the Xbox HD-DVD so am stuck with 4:3 or 16:8 it seems

The red and white audio connection have probably been connected to the wrong input. Typically with VGA connections there is a single 3.5mm sound input connection next to it. Check to see if you have one of those. If you have the official VGA cable then it would have come with an adapter to convert the red and white connections to the single 3.5mm connection.

Regards the zooming in I don't see what the point is in doing so especially with a high definition source. Firstly you're just going to ruin the image as all you're doing is digital blowing up the image by adding information that wasn't there in the first place. Secondly you're not watching the movie the way the director intended. You really need to watch the movies in their original form.

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

Thanks for the reply.

Next to the PC connection on the back of the Panasonic there are Red and White Audio connectors but no 3.5mm jack plug so I've just put them into their respective colours. should i just leave them out?

As far as the black bars/zooming is concerned, you're right i should start to watch it as the Director intended, it's just a bug bear of mine.

That doesn't sound right. Is there somewhere online that shows the specifications of your TV ? Normally for VGA and DVI connections there is a 3.5mm sound input.

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

According to the manual, this is the way you should have your pc connected, so I would imagine this would apply to your 360 as well:

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

According to that diagram there doesn't seem to be a sound input associated with the PC/VGA input. The two phono connections to the left of the PC input look like to me that they are outputs to an external sound source. In other words they are there to take the TV sound out to an external hi-fi device. I could be mistaken though.

Exactly, so it looks like the only way to get audio is via the amp.?

In which case you would either need to use a digital optical cable or connect the two phonos to the amp.

Re: VGA Resolution Question?

The 'audio in' phono connection is the one you want to be using. It's the same with the Samsungs.

The diagram shows quite clearly that the "audio input" is the connection to use with a pc.

Actually no it doesn't. The diagram shows phono connections going directly from the TV to the amp. If they were for sound from a PC then there would be some sort of sound cable being shown going from the TV to the PC instead.

Because there is only the one audio input for PC/Component you will have to share it by using two of these...

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...29192&doy=21m8

...connect one to each audio input and you will then have two left and two right audio inputs. Don't forget to disregard the colour bands on the ends of the connectors though; you will have two left together and two right together.

You should ensure that only one console, X-Box 360 or Wii, is switched on at any one time.
