Just in case you prefer WMV HD format, I used this tutorial and the results were great, it also gives you chance to fit the film onto single or dual layer DVD.

Re: playing mkv

If it'll already fit on a blank (if that's how you're going to view it), you could always try Redkawa Videora XBOX360 Converter. It's free, and it has a profile for using the video from an .mkv file, re-encoding the audio so it's compliant with profiles the 360 can use, and re-muxes them back together ready to play with no re-encoding of the video necessary (that is, of course, if the video was encoded with one of the profiles compliant with the 360).

I've done this with a couple of things, and it's worked great. It's also the fastest method (about 10-25 minutes dependin on the length of the file), so no big deal if it doesn't work.
