'Breathes in through teeth'!

If region coding is not crackable on HD DVD and Blu-ray, will you still buy either?

'Apparently' the dvd forum bods are ratifying a new region lock system for HD DVD right now.

Current Tosh players (USA, JAP) are region free, well, until maybe coded discs arrive that require authentication by the player. Quiver at the thought of them locking it with SSL. Yikes.

LOL yeah, I do too, but there are subtle scenes in some of my movies

Plus, I'd like to think the 360's add on will be good, but I join the masses in thinking it can't possibly stand up to the performance of a dedicated stand alone machine & I guess you shouldn't expect it too either.

i agree there...plus, why should i have to switch on 2 appliances to watch a dvd?!!
i will give the add a chance but i will always go for the stand alone.

i too like to watch films with subs, mainly eastern/asian cinema..but i cant remember the last film i watched with a long silence with subs!
only joking matey..

We'll find out when the Region 2 HD-DVD drives are released over here.

Personally I think us console owners are quite lucky, we have a cheap way of hedging our bets when it comes to the next gen DVD format. For HD-DVD we can buy this drive and for BluRay we have the cheapest option, to buy a PS3.

Anyway, god knows how Im going to fit this HD-DVD drive in to my setup, and god knows where Im going to plug the drive into a power socket.. but I'll find a way.. I always do......

I've just bought a 360 and it makes absolutely no noise whatsoever. Is this a problem with earlier batches then?

It's only the DVD drive that makes a noise during game playback when it is spinning at a fast rate. My 360 is almost silent when watching DVD's or playing HDD content. The HD-DVD drive plays the discs anyway so the 360 DVD drive doesn't even come into the equation when watching HD DVD's.

If it comes out between £100 & £150 then it will be a bargain and as said above, a cheap way of getting into HD-DVD for us 360 owners.

I beg to differ.

Even with the 360 just turned on the noise from it's cooling fans (2) alone are enough.

When you've spent thousands on a mid level cinema with a ultra low noise projector, the last thing you want is the whirling dirvish 360 blowing away ruining it. You can't 'can it' either or the beast overheats.

Yeah, if it's a regular setup and you're not a freaky audiophile like some of us, it prolly won't matter...

Well I must say that the noise is minimal from mine when no disc is spinning and isn't even audable above very quiet sceens in films.

I run a Z3 PJ which is also pretty quiet and have a shuttle HTPC connected as well. I must say that the noise has never bothered me during film viewing and my kit is only about 1 metre above my head.

I'm a freak. I kicked my brewsters HTPC out for noise and went back to a player and it had all the quiet pc stuff & enclosures too.
My hearing is major sensitive. Period.
My projector is loud enough for me. The general consensus is though that the 360 is noisy, most forums are littered with peeps complaints of noise even without a disc.

not the best pictures of the unit....i'm looking forward to a full review

would be interested in getting one but apart from wanting to watch Serenity
http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/ in HD (one of the first films to be shot in HD) I don't really see me using it much.....unless it's got some additional features i don't know about.

I use mine for watching all my recorded TV on my MCE box and I can assure you that even doing that, it is not quiet at all - in the recent hot weather it was getting too noisy. Its well ventilated but it all comes down to ambient noise and temp of the room. The best it gets is watching a DVD (that is very slightly quieter than using the extender interface) - the worst is PGR3

We all know the xbox hd dvd drive will be around £120 - £150. How much will a stand alone hd dvd drive cost and will the release date be later than microsofts effort?

That sounds like a good price I had read a while back that it might cost that much and I didn't believe it! BUt i guess it might well be true.

Those pictures posted before were crap! If you do a search on google there are stacks of pictures and it actually looks pretty good like above. Its not really that big at all

Just like a computer drive in a caddy, which it probably is.

it obviously wasnt as big as the photo made it look, the wireless adaptor is the size of the width of a 360, and the drive is only a few cms larger than the wireless adaptor

I suppose we won't know untill they are both released and can be seen side by side.

I will say however that stuff fed from my media centre PC wirelessly to 360 then outputted to TV looks superb so fingers crossed it'll be great.

It's also a dedicated HD DVD drive so *should* give better results than a jack of all trades drive. I certainly hope so cos the other half will kill me if I have to buy a PS3 at launch.

I will be amazed if the 360 looks better than the PS3. I've got to have both consoles but may not get the HD DVD if i'm honest. Time will tell. It will also
come down to the cost of the discs too (another thing i haven't researched).

Any idea if this add-on will be region coded? I also hope it upscales normal dvd's to 720p and 1080i.

A price and release date would be nice as well. It would be cool for MS if they released it on November 17th, being the same day as Gears of War and release of the PS3
