Xbox 360 Dvd Or Fan Noise

I have just bough a 360 after giving up waiting for the PS3. I am very impressed with it. I bet you can all see that there is a BUT coming.

Is it just me or every time you play a game or play a DVD their is a noise like a VCR tape rewinding. It the same noise that a computer cd or dvd make when it starts up but it does not stop.

There is no vibration, It is either a Fan or the DVD but it does seem noisy. It seems a bit excessive and is a bit annoying during a quite game or if you were watching a DVD. I never had any sound like it from my old PS2. Am I just being to sensitive ?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry the 360 is a bit of a noisy bugger whenever you play a game, I don't notice it anymore especially if I've got the volume cranked up.

Yep, its very loud when playing a game

It shouldn't be when watching a DVD though?

Mine does as you describe (sounds like a disc spinning up on a computer but doesn't stop) - but only when playing a game never when watching a DVD.

I had mine sat vertically until today, putting it horizontally certainly helps with the noise.

And also gets rid of the clunk noise when the drive closes.

The 360 is an unfinished product at the end of the day...but then there's no competition so what can ya do

It isn't nearly as loud when watching a DVD since the drive doesn't need to read as fast.

Trouble is, it stays spinning at full revs even when nothing is being loaded. Noise is constant - not like a computer drive where it just spins up, then spins down again after 10-20 seconds.

Was only really asking about the dvd player to the OP because it really shouldn't be that loud and you might have a defective drive if its anywhere near the volume of when you play a game.

Apparently microsft have started using slightly quieter drives in the latest rev of the 360

PCs do that because the game is installed on the hard drive - 360 games (aside from FFXI) aren't, they have to be constantly streamed.

The OP most likely hasn't used a DVD yet, just presuming that it'll be the same when using one.

I'd have to disagree with that - take the PS2, although it doesn't make much noise you can easily hear when its loading stuff off the DVD.

Often you can take the game out and keep on playing.

Xbox 360 is the same.

If you load up oblivion for example, leave it at the options screen - the drive doesn't spin down - its not loading anything.

I'm sorry I'm trolling now, but umm I can't really understand it myself tbh...maybe its a combination of the fan needed to cool the graphics part as that does seem to get very hot at the back of the 360.

The DVD drive is bloody noisy when playing a 360 game as the drive constantly spins at top speed!!

it's unacceptable in my opinion. Will be getting a PS3 if it's quieter

I must admit the drive is loud and when i first got my 360 I was as worried as anyone but I think once you start playing have the 5.1 sound turned up you will never notice it!!!! It's only when 'she who must be obeyed' is trying to watch her daily fix of soaps that I have to turn the sound down and the noise becomes a little more noticable!

My 360 is very noisy when it reads 360 games, but you can only really hear the fans when Xbox games or DVDs are playing.

The fans alone on my 360 are noisier then my Xbox's hard drive and DVD drive going at the same time.

Thankfully no problems with my 360 though, so I'll take the noise over crashes and scratched/cracked discs.

Can't really be compared, the PS2 is a 2x DVD-ROM, the Xbox 360 is a 12x drive (admittedly that is its maximum on the outter edge).

Even so, its a Constant linear velocity drive so it will sound the same volume no matter where its reading from.

It is abit of a **** take really and isn't mentioned in the review sites nearly enough

Indeed it is loud when playing a game and it need not be. If the devs gave the game its correct development time, the disc would not have to spin as near as much as it does now.

I think atm we are still seeing games being rushed out and thus some sloppy development elements.

Has there been any official announcement from Microsoft / Devs that future games could come out with slower disc spin speeds?

I found it is a lot quieter if you shut the 360 in a cupboard.

That way the 360 gets so incredibly hot you can use it for cooking.

Thanks

Thanks to you all for your responses
I was worried, I am now just disappointed in the loud noise when playing
but am enjoying the system to much to worry any more
Having spent half a day thrown potatoes at a German prisoner of war (call of duty) and having rewriting history as the evacuation of Dunkirk failed because of poor air cover (blazing angels) i am learning to just live with it.
Thanks again

Funny thing is now.....I worry when the DVD drive stops making it's hovercraft noise when playing a game as this normally means a 'disc unreadable' crash is about to follow
