Xbox 360 as DVD Player

I have my Xbox connected upto my Panny via Component feed, the Xbox is set to 720P but does it upscale DVD's to this picture setting or does it stay at 480?

Just wondering?

Does anyone actually know what they are talking about on this Xbox 360 section of the forums??

You do NOT get 576p, when you play DVD's they run in 480p.

You Australian? As UK or US dont have such a resolution from my understanding.

UK televisions run in 576i not 576p, DVD's on a HDTV run at 480p.

Xbox games on a HDTV run at 480p yes, Xbox 360 then has the option for 480p, 720p and 1080i.

I'm from the UK! DVD's do indeed run at 576P in progressive scan on EDTV/HDTV's. If you have such a TV, stick a DVD in your 360 then press the info or display button on your TV's remote. 99.99999% certain it will say 576P as the 360 is a progressive scan player

The Xbox 360 does not play movies in 576p it plays only in 480p - it is unable to display in 576p as there is no setting option for this resolution.

I know of 576i but have never come across 576p, and on top of that the Xbox 360 is not able to output a 576p signal for movies only 480p.

I will stand by this and and Microsoft will say the same, the Xbox 360 outputs only 480p for movies.

dude, PAL DVD's are displayed at 576P on a TV that supports it. It is called PROGRESSIVE SCAN. If you don't believe me, google it.

Just rang Microsoft again:

The Xbox 360 only supports the following resolutions:

480p, 720p and 1080i UK Spec.

The above resolutions are achieved on a HDTV, DVD playback on a HDTV will run at 480p.

Games run at 720p and 1080i on a HDTV.

have a look round www.empiredirect.co.uk, goto the TV section, check out a few of the dearer CRT's - you should see progrsssive scan listed on some of their specs.

The Xbox 360 outputs DVDs @ 576p
This is a standard progressive scan DVD playback

Since you lot as I pretty much know are infact useless I found the answer myself its pretty much on this thread: -

http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/archive/in...p/t-50737.html

Upon further investigating I was indeed right the 360 gives the option for 480p only however 576p is acheived as a 'mis-labelled' option.

Now those running in 576p from what I gather have the selection on their 360 on 480p but infact for UK spec the movies indeed run in 576p.

But reading further on other sites apparently 480p is better?

You lot seriously need to back up information and provided something worth arguing about - I argued and provided information.

Oh dear!
Here's some info for you, here!
720 x 480 is NTSC (i.e. America etc. i.e. not us)
720 x 576 is PAL (i.e. England etc. i.e. us)

Therefore normal Pal DVDs will be 576i
In progressive scan that will be 576p

[Note: Linking another forum with people who also don't know what they're talking about isn't particularly reliable information]

When in doubt check the faq...

Quote:
2.4 Is Xbox 360 DVD playback progressive scan? Do I need to buy a DVD remote to playback DVDs?

As stated on the official Xbox website, you are able to "watch progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box" meaning you will not need to buy an additional remote control to unlock the DVD player functions of the console and it will output a progressive scan signal. The 360 does not upscale DVD signals to 720p or 1080i however but it does support 480p. PAL DVDs play back in 576p.
