Playing DivX on XBOX 360

[FONT="Verdana"]I’ve recently spent a lot of money buying an XBOX 360 and a Media Center. One of the big selling points for me was the streaming capabilities of my large MP3’s & Videos collections.

I have set it all up and found the WMV only video streaming and am quite mad. This is typical Microsoft pushing their technologies & formats onto everyone whether they like it or not.

I’m not looking for a DivX -> WMV converter application. Does anyone know of any hardware/software decoders that will seamlessly convert on the fly?

Agreed that the 360 should be able to play divx "out of the box". Nearly all dvd players are now divx certified and a media extender that can't decode divx without extra MCE programs running isn't much of a media player!

I remember hearing that Microsoft would implement divx support if there was sufficient request for it. I think there is!

Transcode 360 Beta 2 -- Posted by XanTium on April 1 20:11 EST
Runtime released a new beta version of Transcode 360(info), a tool that, combined with Windows Media Center 2005, will allow you to stream a wide range of video formats to your Xbox 360 and Media Center Extender devices (by transcoding them to high-quality MPEG2):

Transcode 360 Beta 2 has been released, featuring a radically overhauled engine for playback of XviD and DivX (as well as a wide variety of other formats), boasting higher picture quality, lower CPU consumption, faster than real-time transcoding (using FFMPEG under the bonnet); super-tight integration enabling Pause, Skip Forward and Backward, Resume and Restart while transcoding without any need for non-standard user-interface conventions.

VLC360 v1.2 -- Posted by XanTium on March 27 12:36 EST
VLC360 is a french application (MCE plugin), similar to Transcode 360(info) and MCE Video Encoder(info), that will encode XViD, DiVX and other video formats on-the-fly so you can stream them from your Windows MediaCenter PC to your Xbox 360.
As the name suggests it, VLC360 is based on VLC/VideoLan and of course it does require Windows MediaCenter 2005 as OS.

I have personally wirelessly streamed a hdtv-capped xvid of Lost s02e18 using VLC 1.2 with no problems...the dvd.iso support seems a bit troublesome(no audio+quirky interface)though

oh and heres a useful browser too...MCE Browser 2.1
