720p or 1080i ? What do you use

As above i re-set mine to 1080i on the w/e and TBH i though it was a bit better than the 720p setting having read various threads i thought 720p was meant to be better due to it being progressive

What does everyone else use ?

Tony

I use 1080i myself because although my TV is supposed to support 720p it doesnt seem to work, i've not really got any cause for complaints with 1080i though so i'm not to bothered, I can't imagine there to be much difference, the pictures already fantasic.

Best bet though is to judge for yourself.

720p, as that should be the standard resolution of x360 games. No point it scaling to 1080i then my screen scaling it back again.

In theory 720p should be better as its progressive. But TBH with the shocking framerate on some games, 1080i would be fine.

1080i looks great on my LCD. I prefere it to 720p.. it looks much smoother and I havent noticed any difference in fast-motion games than at 720p.

i use 720p as i recon its alot smoother but when i tried 1080i i could not see the differance. Maybe thats cause it was on the dashboard and not a fast game like burnout

What resolution does your SD plamsa support? I have a Panny PW5 (which is obviously downscaling the pic) but I can't notice the difference between 1080i and 720p on mine - although only on dashboard.

Perhaps i'll give it a go tonight.

I use 720p because it's closer to my TV's native resolution to try and avoid lots of scaling.

I can't see any difference between 720p or 1080i, I can between VGA and component though, but that's another topic.

i use 720p on my Dell lcdtv. I read that you should use 720p for games and 1080i for movies. To be honest they both look the same to me, both awesome!!!

Check out DIRY's thread at the top of the page.

As with all of these threads I'll say the same thing... the settings, cabling and individual tv's all produce different results. There is no generic 'best' option, only whats best for you...

Uhhh, come again?

You can't since no screen has the native resolution that any of the Hi Def formats output at...

A better thing to do would be to say...

Select the one that is closest to your vertical resolution of your screen without bein under its native vertical resolution - sounds arsey, but its true.

Unless you have a scaler and then use the highest it supports

Thats because your using an SD screen

You should be outputting at 480p

Pointless any higher since your just scaling up then scaling back down again.

Not true. There are a load of LCD and plasmas on the market which have native HD resolutions. When looking into buying my latest display I found a good few with a true native 720p resolution.

I have a panasonic ae900 projector and the native resolution of that is 720p, not 1280x768 but the true HD resolution of 1280x720.

As I was buying with the 360 in mind I never looked into the 1080i thing. I dont think (might be wrong) you can get plasmas with this native resolution but you can certainly get an LCD TV with a 1080i native resolution.

For "true HD" Pioneer are releasing 1080p plasmas in september for £7000.

Anyway. I find that on a 106" screen at 720p it looks better than it does at 1080i. Saying that, you would be hard pressed to notice any difference without really examining the picture. Running at the correct resoulution without any scaling seems to offer a smoother sharper picture.

720p is how the 360 games should be experienced so you aren't gaining any detail setting it to 1080i.

I have a Panny PE30 which only supports 852x480 resolution.

I initially used 480p as I thought it would better ‘fit’ the screens native resolution. However, after extensive testing the 1080i does look better than 480p despite being downscaled by the plasma. I have a feeling that the deinterlacer on the plasma is more equipped than the one on the 360.

It depends how good your scaler is. It’s always best to experiement and see what your eyes prefer. For me, 1080i is a distinct improvement over 480p on my SD screen.

I agree. On a SD screen 720p and 1080i look a lot better than 480p but the difference between 720p and 1080i scaled down was negligible.
