DTS on 360

Just put in Master and Commander and when changing the audio formats it works pefect on dolby digital but on DTS all I get is silence. It tells me on screen that its a dts 5.1 soundtrack but nothing. Works fine through the pc.
Is 360 not compatible with dts?

I watched Master and Commander the other night (fine film), I'm not sure if my copy has a DTS soundtrack, but I know for sure that I've watched used the DTS soundtrack on other DVDs without any problem.

hmm, ill try another dts disk at some point.
Not too bothered though, got the film in my pc now and the sound is much better being routed through the x-fi soundcard, even using dolby digital.

Very strange, just tried hitchhikers and 4 of the audio tracks work perfect, but track 3 (dts) gives silence.

Yeah, its a CA 540R, dts works fine using a coax out from my pc. Ill need to try it with the optical from a dedicated dvd player into the same port to confirm its the xbox.

I believe the only way you can get DTS from the 360 is by using the optical output, I assume you are using this?

Sorted, the amp had locked itself on DD for some reason, i cycled it through a few input options and it seems to have fixed itself.

in all honesty i dont think the 360 supports dts (never mind the dvd playback being shocking), i will try later tho.

My reasons for this are that there is no dts mentioned in the sound setup menu.

it simply outputs the digital soundtrack - your receiver processes it, so as long as your amp can handle it, it will work

I have The Descent and my 360 wont accept dts on the film. I have the Denon 2803 amp which accepts dts so dont know why the machine wont play it in dts.

Since I got it sorted the amp flashes up telling me when its receiving a dts signal, so the 360 is definately capable of outputting it.

my penneth....

tried I-Robot and used the DTS sound - my amp (Yamaha) immediately switched to let me know DTS was being received.

Personally I would ditch my DVD player if the X360 could be multi-region.

Is there any way the X360 DVD side could be switched into a multi region player, without MS finding out via Live and closing my account or something.

Thanks

Matt

I was messing about with this for ages, my amp can cope with DTS but it was always saying it was recieving Dolby digital.....on the "i robot" dvd i went to the 'set-up' menu and Dolby digital was defaulted so i selected DTS....and hey presto!

Simple when you know how!

I had the same thought, but as the 360 isn't capable of upscaling and has no HDMI out I decided to buy the excellent samsung hd-950 for dvds with a bundled hdmi lead. Much better solution IMO.

When I select DTS on descent the sound just crackles. I selected dolby digital in the 360 set up menu maybe I should change it to the pro amp but i dont know what it means by pro amp.

mine certainly outputs a dts signal also for films. they should use it for games as it stomps all over dd5.1 imo much more power.

DTS uses a lot less compression so takes up a lot more space plus it probably requires a lot more power then DD for real time processing/decoding in the games. It probably technically not possible with today's hardware.

Interesting thread. As has been mentioned in several different reports/threads now the Xbox 360 does not support DTS natively. Likewise CD playback. What it will do however is upscale/downsample as required to make them compatible with the purcahsed licences.

For CD playback, for example, the machine remains in Dolby Digital 5.1 mode. As many of you will know then the 360 simply resamples the 44.1 kHz CD audio to 48 kHz. You do have the option to force PCM output which avoids a lossy conversion to AC3 but still converts to 48 kHz.

TDVD DTS tracks encoded 96/24 seem to work provided the bitrate doesn't peak. The exception is some DTS tracks, including DTS music CDs, which fail to be detected by 360 and thus don't play. This is an error in the playback software that should be corrected shortly.

Now what does all the above matter? Well as this thread has demonstrated the answer is simply that most users don't really have either the kit or the ears to tell the difference. Infact I would be prepared to bet that many people here who think 'DTS' is better think so because it is louder during action scenes! Regardless anyone using the 360 as a DVD player probably doesn't care anyway...

You need a external decoder for dts, the reason is that the 360 only reads DTS tracks and send them to an external decoder like the xbox 1.

The only formats that 360 really decodes and outputs directly to the speakers are "dolby digital" and "WMA PRO".

short awnser: Yes it reads DTS, but you need a dts decoder and a digital connection.
