Does anyon know if the joytech vga end of the lead is female??

No it's Male, just like the official MS one - If you are wanting to connect to a normal monitor which does not have a removable VGA lead (which is what i am assuming you want to do)

you will need a 15 Pin F-F convertor like this one:

The MS official vga lead comes with an adaptor and also phono to jack adaptor also.

better picture i hear too.
