Talking Media Centre Setup

Just set this up.
I am very impressed with what I can now do. I think once these consoles are more widely available I shall get a couple more for other parts of the house. I am watching Top Gear from my MCE system in my study - whilst in the lounge via the xbox.

The real test is will it play my hi def .TS files?

Its good but not THAT good!
But it would not show me many of the divx films (interestingly some of the music video's I have in Divx & VOB worked fine) I had (maybe a DRM issue!!)and neither would it work with "My DVD's" plug in which was a shame! I have a few films on the hard disk and was hoping MCE Extender could show those.
Fortunately in my Lounge I have a hard wired connection to my router so over 100Mb connection there is no issue.
I have ordered a wireless link for the xbox and will see what that offeres. Music and Pictures are no problem.

The TV works great, so anything recorded and Live TV is cool.

I will continue to fiddle with it but thought I would outline what I've done. Next week I will get the Xbox Media Remote but I have a Harmony 680 which will do the job as well.

Cheers

Tone

This is interesting. We were mucking around with MCE and the 360 a couple weeks ago. We couldn't get dvix working - is there a plug-in on the MCE side that could perhaps be enabling the playback of those music videos ? Is it possible that some of the dvix films are actually xvid.

I've had a play with the Media Center stuff - you can't play divx/xvid or similar, only MPEG1/MPEG2 and WMV files.

However, I have a small program called WinAVI video converter which is very simple to use and can convert avi or whatever to WMV. On Athlon 3500 (overclocked a bit!) it takes about 1/2 the length of the movie to convert it and you get a file which is just a little bigger with no quality loss. You can alos specify a batch list so you can just leave it running if you have a bunch of files to convert. There are other programs which can do the same, including the free WMV Encoder download from MS, but Ilike this the best because is quick and easy.

You can then play all your movies thru the Media Center.

It's still not as good as XBMC on the Xbox1, though.

you should of stuck with the xbox + XBMC
I don't even have to unzip or unrar my .avi files in multipart archives
XBMC unarchives as it plays, and 720p looks good!

did your Xbox do all that when it 1st came out ?, I have a hunch that the xbox360 offers tons more opportunities than an original xbox.

give it a few weeks and see

my order is now in since a play on a friends 360 last night, admittedly no divx/xvid or .ts support out of the box was a little disappointing [my shrek2 HD was a no go, and one of his divx titles didn''t play either], but I'm sure all will come good shortly
