XBOX 360 Argos pre-order

Just taken the plunge and pre-ordered an Xbox 360 from Argos, the £349 effort with 2 games. Anyone else pre-ordered with them ? Their website specifically states that if you pre-order from them you will receive your console on Dec 2nd, they have also taken £349 from my credit card so if they dont keep their promise then I'm going to play holely hell for false advertising

Alarm bells are ringing in my mind! Nobody yet is sure of the allocation to be granted by M$. Argos might only receive a few 360's in the first batch, or may receive none at all! It also puzzles me that they have debited your card straight away. I ordered from Currys and they will not take payment until they ship the order.

It seems a bit like Argos are borrowing £350 from you for a couple of months then may simply refund you if they cannot meet demand ... Just my 2p though...

I think this little nugget next to the "Buy or Reserve" button on the Argos Xbox 360 page tells you all you need to know !

So you're saying that Argos, the biggest catalogue store in the country, may not receive ANY 360s for launch day? Errr..... I'd be willing to guess that they get more than a fair few.

Back to the original point though, I think you should email them to get written confirmation that it is not subject to stock, and that you are guaranteed a unit for 2nd Dec. Some of the text seems a little suss, like
Quote:
Whilst stocks last for a limited time only
Does that mean that if on launch day they haven't got enough units, you'll miss out? Or does it mean that once a certain number of people have bought that item from the website they'll take it off the site?

Get written confirmation so that you can demand compensation if it doesn't materialise!

I thought Robbie Bach said that all retails chains have been told how many to expect on launch and that they will get more the week after

Well following my original post I have telephoned Argos today to get some clarification. The guy has told me that they have been told by their "buyers" how many units they will have available on launch day and are taking pre-orders until that number is reached when they will then stop taking pre-orders. He said that the only delay I might experience is that I may get the console delivered on Mon 5th Dec as they might struggle to deliver them all on Dec 2nd. He also stated that the Argos chain will be getting possibly the biggest share of Xbox 360 units in the UK on launch day, significantly more he stated than Currys / Dixons and any well known computer store. So there you have it ! Is it all ******** ? Suppose only time will tell

I went into Game this morning to see if I was guaranteed a 360 on launch day but they said only the first 8 or 10 people were guaranteed one on launch day. I did not have my receipt with me at the time and she did not know where the pre-order book was so coudn't check.
When I pre-ordered I was told I would def have one having pre-orded it 23rd August. My recipt has me as number 1014

Maybe I should pre-order at Argos instead.

Have to check my preorder now - starting to get concerned - ordered from GAME in Plymouth about the same time as you. Have a preorder from Virgin (in July) as a backup though.

Fingers crossed one of them will have me a launch day machine

well i cancelled my play.com preorder because i simply cant afford it so near to xmas,so to cheer her miserable hubby up,mrs damage said get it from argos on my argos card and pay it off monthly.(6months 0%interest)

so 5 seconds later its in the basket ordered and a guaranteed delivery on the 2nd.

i do trust argos as theyve not let me down in the past and they got my psp to me exactly when they said.

but saying that if they think im waiting till the 5th for delivery they can think again, ill be screaming down the phone every half hour demanding my 360!!!!

Exclamation

I have my name on the list with a local place.. "The Kart Klub"... they're not doing pre-orders as such, they're just going to tell me when they kknow what the situation is because, in the owner's own words "we don't know how many we're gonna be allocated yet, no one does"... so i'd beware of anyone who guarantees you one on Dec 2nd!!

I'm taking the plunge with places that don't pre-order, having left it too late to get a guaranteed machine. So will be queuing up outside the local dixons at stupid o'clock on the morning of the 2nd..!

That's if I don't get one in the states the week before

But Dixons do pre-order - I paid a £20 desposit for the X-Box 360 - Is that not a pre-order?

A word of warning - as i understand it the Xbox360 does not come with a HDDVD/Blu-ray player. PS3 does - but sony suck anyway.

What's that all about? This is common knowledge now, and that isn't entirely constructive criticism...

I'm not sure there will be anymore of a shortage for the 360 than there was for the PSP. I pre-ordered that to make sure I got one, but my local Tesco had them on the shelves on launch day (albeit they sold out in 2 days). I have pre-ordered two but won't stress. Worse case scenario - I don't get one 'til the new year and it has an HD-DVD drive.

I agree there may not be the difficulty getting them that people worry about, but it could happen.

surely worst case scenario would be not getting either til new year and them NOT having HD-DVD drives (which I think seems a distinct possibility)

The chances of you getting an X-Box 360 with an HD-DVD drive in the new year is zero, unless of course the launch units come with one as well, which of course they won't.

Well it all depends what your getting the unit for... personally i'd be getting it for the games.
The only problem i could see happening in the future is that they bring out HD/DVD games and the first wave of Xbox 360's to come won't be able to play them... so you'd need to buy an updated version (do i hear the kerr-ching of microsoft's bank balance getting bigger?).

This of course would be LAME.... there would be a lot of ****** off people and a lot of people suggesting about how much Bill Gates would be better off blowing Goats for a living than making games consoles!!
