Quick question - i am on the look out for a audio dongle so i can run an optical cable into my new astro mixamp.

however until i get one i plan on modding my old component cable and run that at the same time as my HDMI lead.

now all i need from the component cable is the optical output.

hence can i safely cut all the other wires off as i dont want another huge bundle of wires in my living room.

when i did it it didnot cause me any problems i just cut all the cables off and i was just left with the plug and i had to remove the outer plastic casing so the hdmi cable and the plug would fit at the same time, i used some electrical tape round the plug to make it look a bit neater and it still worked.

Not if you put electrical tape on the ends of the cables you cut off.
