Re: whats the difference between 1080i and 1080p

1080p is better than 1080i so I wouldn't worry about it.

To be honest depending on how close you are you'd be very hard pushed to tell the difference even between 720 and 1080 anyway.

Let me google that for you

Re: whats the difference between 1080i and 1080p

Can nobody give him a straight answer?

“i” stands for interlaced. That means the picture is scanned in two passes, or “fields,” each lasting 1/60th of a second. The first pass fills in the odd numbered lines, leaving the even numbered lines blank, which are filled in by the second pass. Because each field takes 1/60th of a second, and there are two of them, 1080i actually needs 1/30th of a second to convey a full frame.

Because human vision works by retaining images for a brief period of time on the eye’s retina, the interlace scan process makes two separate scans of an image appear as one frame.

"p" stands for progressive and that only makes 1 pass so it looks better.

Honestly most human beings cant tell the difference. Our eyes/brains arent that amazing just yet...

You could at least acknowledge the source of your info: 1080i or 1080p HDTV?

As has been stated you will get many hits on google of people explaining the differences - eg the link above and as has also been stated the vast majority will not be able to tell the difference i expect

Plus, I didn't think any 360 games were output in 1080p yet anyway... thought they were all 720p in the main...

No worries, sometimes it is best and easier to be told instead of searching for yourself. Especially when there are many misleading articles out there.

There are a few, but not many. Some Arcade titles where the graphics aren't that great at any resolution, mainly. The only disc-based game I know of is Virtua Tennis 3.

Re: whats the difference between 1080i and 1080p

Nobody's mentioned this either so here you go -

If your TV is 1080p that's what you'll get, a 1080p set cannot 'interlace' & it cannot do anything other than show a 1080p (progressive scan) image.

If it was to try and show the NTSC 480i/p, PAL 576i/576 or 720p you would get black borders around the image
(and you'd be looking at a small rectangle of image in a sea of black - like you get with some of the 'extra's' you see on high definition movies).

Games like COD4 are actually 600p but it gets scaled up; if the scaler in your HD TV or HD receiver is decent you'll not really notice it anway.

Worth mentioning that certain games dont run very well at 1080p (ie RE5) but are fine at 1080i so since then I have left mine set to 1080i, no overscan and no horrible screen tearing

Yeh im the same + it boosts your post count

So if Progressive does it faster why do games liek RE5 have trouble at cut scenes running at 1080p?

Resident Evil runs pap at 1080p because the developers did a pap job. It runs fine at 1080i because it has less work to do. :D

Sometimes its best to ignore Ash, otherwise we will all turn bald and watch BBC/Sky news 24/7 whilst wearing tweed jackets, drinking fosters and smoking Cafe Creme

Probaley not but there cant be much if any quality difference between 1080i and 1080p upscaled games so I just leave it on a setting I know wont cause problems.

be careful and make sure you know the difference between what it can display and what inputs it can accept. Just because it's output is a fixed resolution doesnt mean you'll get black borders around any input video of a lower resolution. In fact, that will only happen if your tv is capable of 1:1 pixel mapping and actually that isnt the norm. just about every tv on the market will scale video to the appropriate resolution for displaying, and this includes 1080i on a 1080p tv.
