American Xbox 360 in UK

HI
Do I need a step down converter to make sure the american xbox does not fry using UK current (i.e. using a simple plug converter instead)? I have a plug converter that works with dual voltage and laptops, would this work?

thanks
Chantal

I assume you just need end part of the power supply (that connects to the brick) you could prob pick the end part up for a few pounds on ebay

Re: American Xbox 360 in UK

You'll need either a fairly hefty convertor, or a uk xbox power supply, the PSU is not dual voltage.

Re: American Xbox 360 in UK

As above instead of using a step-down transformer, see if you can get a UK power supply and use that on the console without causing any damage

@ Dragon: A transformer is not that big, they are in near enough every electrical device. Though they can get hot

When you mean a UK power supply, I assume you mean one of those big grey blocks you get with any Xbox 3?

Yes a UK Xbox 360 power supply will work just fine although you need to make sure you get the right one. There is the newer 175 watt and the older 200+ watt ones. They both have different connections as well as power levels. I bought a 2nd hand 175 watt one and it wouldn't physically connect to my 2 year old US Elite. I haven't got around to buying the right one yet so I'm still using a heavy duty transformer.

Re: American Xbox 360 in UK

The newest ones are 150W

If you buy one that is power higher than the console eg your old one is a 175W and you buy a 203W then it will work perfectly fine and not do any damage

There isn't any like with the majority of imported products. MS UK will not honour any warranty on an imported console.

Appalling imo. Plenty of people move countries, bringing their consoles with them.

Re: American Xbox 360 in UK

Does anyone know where I can get the UK PSU (the newest one since I got my XBox in February) in the UK? I've been looking online but nothing really comes up. I have to say though why isn't the powerbrick dual voltage which makes it easier for moving?

any other advice? I'm all paranoid that my Xbox will fry.

I recon 5000 out of 30 million...maybe if that

I think in this situation the person choosing to move to another country should shoulder the cost of repair

Sorry but I really don't see your point. Whilst I agree it would be nice if the warranties were valid worldwide I can understand why companies restrict the warranties to the country of origin. There is nothing really appalling about it and the majority of companies out there have the same policy.

One of the few exceptions is laptops which are designed by nature for travel including overseas so more often then not do have worldwide warranties.

If you buy an imported console or move to a different country then you should be aware of this to begin with. All my consoles are imported but I am aware of the risk and know the warranty will not be honoured over here.

Your best bet is Ebay as the PSU's are not sold officially at retail. You could also try places that sell second hand stuff like CEX and if you have one your local independent game shop. I bought one from one of my local CEX stores a few weeks ago but unfortunately it was one of the newer ones and I have a two and a half year old console. I had to take it back.

That's ok, you don't need to see my point in order for me to make it. But I too can understand why warranties are restricted. But what IS appalling afaic, is the fact that a minority of genuine users will emigrate needing warranty cover.

You're in an advantageous position then aren't you. Nevertheless, a minority will always find themselves unexpectedly needing to move regions. Should they have to then sell their xbox, loose money, and then buy again in the new region? Not in my opinion. Multinational corps owe their consumers more.
Just as well we're talking opinions here eh, where neither yours or mine is any more the correct.
