Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

Wow, suprised to see that this one slipped under the radar. Has anyone got this yet? Impressions? Judging by the video's it has awsome graphics, character customisation, choices, story, atmosphere,... basically the makings of a great RPG execpt for one thing... the combat looks BOOOORRING. Anyone else think this or is it just me?

No it's not just you, it looks boooring. I was hoping when I saw this announced that it would be like Mass Effect in a dungeon and dragons setting but alas not. I think its more of a point and click type thing.

I assume you havent played it then, as the console version is pretty much identical to ME in its combat mechanics.

I have completed the Human Noble origin as Rogue and currently playing the Magi origin; I think I prefer the magic user so far, seem to have more combat options than the rogue so far. What has anyone else tried, origin or class wise? Any favourites so far?

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

I've tried both the human noble and the city elf origins at the moment. I am not sure if I want to do all 6 origins first bfore picking my favourite and going through the game? What are others doing?

Out of my human warrior and elf rogue, I preferred the rogue. Or at least I preferred the city elf story.

I really want to play this game more but I have so many others I really want to finish first I don't know what to do

Unless there's an unmissable supermarket price for MW2 I won't even pick that up!

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

I have decided to play through all 6 origins first, they are only about 90mins long, as I cant see myself coming back to replay it once I have it finished (I reckon this will keep me going until ME2).

Need an opinion. Looking for a new game for the girlfriend. She loved the Baldurs Gate games on the PC, but wasn't overly keen on the one that came out on XBox a few years back. She does love Oblivion though, don't hurt me for asking but if she likes that, will she like this? Thanks in advance.

Erm, I'm just judging by the videos and reviews here, but this game dosen't look as good as Oblivion. And i'm not sure if i like the idea of the third person camera, really: first person tends to help me connect with RPG's...

Is this really the case?, do you have full control in combat?, If so I may give it a stab.

Don't listen to this review, it's written by a reviewer that has no concept of RPG's

Take a look at the many other reviews on GameRankings - Video Game Reviews from around the Internet to get a more balanced view

Cheers

That link was just for a comparison between console and pc not really about the review of the game overall.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

Great game that gets better once you understand the combat and particularly tactics including getting your health potions to be taken automatically when health goes below certain level etc

Its definately a story driven game, so therefor its a game to be enjoyed at a slower pace, and to get the most out of it you need to read at least most of the new entries in your journal and not just the quest info.

I played mass effect, and really liked it. looking forward to the 2nd release.
But from what i remember the combat was different to Dragons Age. But then again dragons age is more of an old school story and stats driven rpg. Different kinds of games in my opinion.

Regarding the 3rd person. This has been done well in this game, as well as the 1st person in oblivion.

Im playing as noble warrior. Want a rogue in my party as i keep thinking im missing good stuff in those chests

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

The one thing you notice fairly early on in this game is that it doesn't matter what character you choose to play, as you can switch characters in your party and play as them

Certainly keeps the battles fresh!

This is most certainly NOT the BG games that came out on the Xbox, neither is it Oblivion.

I have this for both Xbox and PC (although only played the Xbox so far), and this does at least appear to be quite a deep game, plenty of opportunity to get lost in the lore and trying to play a character the way you want to.

After a couple of hours playing really enjoying it, havent quite got combat down but have enjoyed the battles so far.

So to answer your question, if shes like a proper RPG then I would say YES she'll like this game.

Can already tell I will lose many hours to this game.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

I have this game, not yet started it though as i'm gonna finish gay tony first (that sounds sketch).

Just got another combat question though, is it actual contact on the body stuff with the swords, i've seena few vids and it looks like a WoW kind of affair where you strike the enemy but its just a case of how much damage they take due to your stats if that makes sense.

I hear theres alot of gore also, so if you aim at an arm or head will they come off accordingly or is it random.

In one word yes

Haven't played WoW but as in most traditional RPG's your chance of landing a critical hit on an enemy is based on your stats. There are rings, potions that can increase the stats as in other games of this genre.

I've played for about 6 hours now and have barely scratched the surface.

A fantastic game in my opinion

Cheers

I like the likes of Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 , Fable 2 etc, so do you reckon this game would tickle my fancy? (I've not heard that phrase in a while!)

Yep had what appears to be audio drop-out too ... not always sure that there should be more said though in response to my question / statement so may just be a dodgy animation as opposed to missing audio.

Brilliant game though, just had a big bust up with my party because I allowed someone to sacrifice themselves in order for me to rescue someone else ... thought one of them was going to leave my group all together ... for a moment I was feeling guilty that I may have made a wrong decision ... not often a game makes me feel like that.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

think ive got the same decision as you. spoiler start chose to go to mages circle and see if i could get mages help in a ritual. went to circle of mages but couldnt save any of them as i couldnt work out how to use the scroll thing that could save the remaining mages??spoiler end

edit. managed to save the main mage. loaded an earlier save after working out how to use the litany of Andralla.

spoiler start its in the advanced section of the radial menu (left trigger) when the mags get this whirling circle of light around them run over and use the litany to stop the demons taking them over. spoiler end

So can you please confirm the console (well 360) version does NOT have the "overhead" view the PC version has?

Bit gutted if you're locked to 3rd person, as it must make planning much more difficult... and i've only got Macs so cant play the PC version.

sorry for going off-topic, but can you not use bootcamp or virtual server to run it under windows?

The 3rd person view can make planning your combat a bit more tricky, but you get quickly used to it.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins Play & Help Thread

Was trying to decide whether to get this on Xbox or PC, so I borrowed a copy on Xbox to try, and found the controls and graphics to be fine but the sound quality was terrible. The compression is really obvious and especially using my headphones I found it really uncomfortable. Needless to say I have it on PC now and no such problems.

I realise that they had to squeeze a lot of data onto one DVD but I think they could of perhaps used two disks instead and not compressed the data as much, but i suppose that having an extra disc costs that much more.
