Forza 3: Preview Pt 1 (UK Release: 23 Oct 2009)

First details of Forza 3 have been leaked according to Kotaku...

Quote:
Forza Motorsport 3 is so huge that the limitations of the DVD format became an issue. It will include 400 cars, 100 tracks and must ship on two discs. Car deformation was also mentioned as a feature of the new title.

Sony fanboys are going to have a field day with the 2 disc news.

Re: Forza 3

That is a bit lame you must admit- the days of multiple disk changes etc should have been left behind with the Amiga (beneath a steel sky had 15 disks)

On the other hand, if they're using the space to deliver a comprehensive driving sim package, then I guess fans of racing sims won't be too bothered.

Re: Forza 3

Not bothered about the 2 disks but it will be interesting to see if they have managed to improve the graphics engine. I really like Forza 2 but it isn't the most impressive visual title you'll ever play so lets hope they've managed to extract more from the engine while still keeping it super smooth.

Re: Forza 3

Forza is made for the 360, and there having problem getting all the content they need on DVD, the the other game developers will surly start having the same problem?

Re: Forza 3

I am not too fussed about two discs for a racing game. However at least it is not three DVD's.

My final thoughts:

On the whole I would of liked to see the game on one DVD, but as the old saying goes, life is never fair.

Re: Forza 3

I'd be very surprised to see any MS developed game ship on more than 1 disc - it's like saying to the opposition "You were right all along". 100 tracks? No need. And they've always had car deformation. Hmmm.

Re: Forza 3

The only people who will look like fools if the game ships on 2 discs is Microsoft who said DVD9 was more than enough this generation.

Perhaps they could get around it by releasing the same on DVD and then adding everything else via free DLC.

Looking forward to seeing some footage as the 2nd game was so nice and silky smooth to play

Exactly my point and precisely why I'm not convinced this story is true. Without wanting to get involved in the "DVD is enough" debate myself, absolutely the last men standing in the DVD camp will be Microsoft.

Re: Forza 3

I cant believe people are still moaning about multiple disc games

If it means they can fit much more into the game then whats wrong with that?

This only seems to have become an issue since the launch of Bluray, plenty of games used to have multiple discs before and no-one would bat an eyelid - in fact alot of people used to be impressed by extra discs as it meant the game was bigger (final fantasy 7 PS1 & RE 2)

Im really not bothered how many discs it comes on as long as its implemented well, i.e. you only have to swap discs at the half way point, not constantly swapping discs as then that does become irritating.

But if it means they can make Forza 3 much bigger, with better graphics and car damage & more info, then

Couldn't agree any more with you mate.

When you think about how long games are nowadays your probably talking about swapping the disc once every 10 hours or something like that. I'm not convinced that (if this is true) there will actually be 100 tracks... probably more like different variations of tracks...

The more content the better in my eyes, if it start getting to where Monkey Island was on the Amiga where there where 10+ discs and you did have to swap them in and out quite a bit, then I agree MS would have a big decision to make, but I just don't see what the big fuss is about with 2 discs over such a big game.

Haven't we already had Microsoft published games with multiple discs? I swear Lost Oddysey is one and that would probably mean Blue Dragon or whatever it was, is as well.

Re: Forza 3

With a multi disk game like Forza 3, it's not really going to need the disc change when your game progress hits 50%, because if it did that would mean half way through the game you would have to stop using certain cars and tracks?

However, I'm sure there will be an install option for those of us with hard drives allowing us to install the additional content from disk 2 meaning it will essentially be a single disc game.

Re: Forza 3

If its 2 disks then so be it, if its a good game do we really care about telling the mrs to get up and change the disk for us, nah.

I do however agree that it'll make M$ look a little on the silly side, as has been mentioned they was so sure DVD 9 would do the trick and I allways thought well I can see these games getting bigger and bigger as they make them better.

Forza 3 could be a good game though and hopefully less jaggie car models, look at the grid cars and then put forza in you'll see what I meen.

Yep, this is what I was abouts to post. I doubt it's true that the game will ship on multiple discs, but just for fun anyway :-

Re: Forza 3

Call me old fashioned but 400 cars? Isn't that a bit OTT? I'd rather they have 100 really good looking cars than 400 average ones.

As for two discs, I'm not convinced. Forza was never a big game and no amount of tracks will push the boundaries (since most textures are reused, sounds are the same, etc).

Stranger things, I suppose, but this reminds me of the UT3 rumour (so many maps it will need multiple discs). For a 40+ hour JRPG, fair enough, but a racer? I don't see it happening.

Agreed and it's this sort of game where you really do need it on 1 disc! Can you imagine, "yeah guys we're having a race on Laguna Seca now so go dig your disc 2 out. Oh and keep disc 1 handy as we're off back to play Road America after that" .

Sure linear games where you only have to swap the disc at a certain point in the story are fine on multi discs, but this sort of game is not.

That said, the Forza franchise is one of my fave franchises on the Xbox so I can only hope that they squeeze it onto one disc.

Re: Forza 3

Thats a point, where in a racing game would be a *good* opportunity to change discs?

As long as it's implemented properly, they could put it on 5 discs for all i care as long as the game is good.

Lets face it, forza 2 became a grind 3/4 of the way through career anyway and that was only 1 disc.

i'm not convinced about multiple discs either, but if you have Sky HD look out for a programme on RushHD as there programme on there about making Forza2 and iirc during one of the epiodes the head developer mentions something about getting the tracks to load properly because of all the data involved and not being able to utalise the HDD like they did for forza1 (someone who has seen it or knows about game making better than me might be able to shed some more light on that) On that note why not start making games for 360 that require a HDD as standard, this surely would solve some issues, and id imagine the number of owners who dont have a hdd is pretty low, and even those who dont have a hdd are likely to be the more casual gamer so wouldn't be to intersted in Forza anyway, theyd much rather have the next piece of pish in the NFS series

The problem with making games that need an install is that most folk just have a 20gb HDD of which just 13gb is usable. The 120gb drive is a complete rip off and there's no way that folk are going to be happy to splash out on one of them all of a sudden. If they are going to go down this route then the install needs to be optional and I guess they need to start bundling large HDD's with the game for a sensible price.

Re: Forza 3

I'm not suggesting that they stick the whole game on the HDD, but if the game does require 2 disc(which i still doubt) then why not have 1 Master disc, and 1 Install disc that contains X data(i dont know what X could be, but clever people do!). I've had my 360 HDD since launch and the lowest amount of space i've had on there is 4gb, which is what it is right now due to the recent demos that have come out, so im pretty certain that the majority of gamers, or a gamer that wants to play forza3, will have/sacrifice 2-4gbs of space to play the game(personally id sacrifice all of the 12gbs!)

Oh indeed, that's what I was meaning (kind of like how the PS3 does 4-5gb installs to speed up loading), not that there would be an 18gb install or anything like that (like a PC). It would be fine if it was just something that happened with this one game, but you just know that if one game does it then other games will do it as well. It's bad enough with the PS3's 60gb HDD, but at least you can whack a 250gb one in that for about £50.

I'm just thinking from the wider commercial aspect I guess. I don't know, as much as I feel that the 360 has a lot of life left in it (in terms of performance etc.), maybe it's time for them to consider the 720 or something. That way they can include a Blu Ray drive a huge HDD as standard. I guess if it comes out late 2010 then that's a 5 year life for the 360 (which isn't too bad).

Re: Forza 3

Just a small point on these so called HD installs, I was going to get Stubbs the Zombie the other day and decided against it as it was 3.2 or 3.4 gig. Thats a last gen game and it seamed alot of space to me, I had to leave it as I only had 3 gig left as theres been some good demos and I still haven't play through them all yet. I do feel the way forward is to make the bigger drives more affordable, and if a game requires some kind of install then the space will not be a big issue. I have allways moved on from games and would quite happily delete something I have fininshed with so the 120 gig drive HDD would be pleanty for me, it needs a reduced price if this is the future of gaming, just my 1 pence worth. I still doubt it will be on 2 disks, but who knows.

Anywho, I think the 2 disc feature is ok, I couldnt care less how many discs they include, just as long as its not a hassle using both. But please turn 10, include some Anti-Aliasing!!! The jaggies on Forza 2 where killing the graphics.

The most important thing for me is graphics/car modelling improvements.

Re: Forza 3

Oh really.... come on! Blu ray fan boy will have a field day?

So, since day one, every 360 should have had a BR drive, inflating the cost by over a hundred quid a unit, inflating price per unit of EVERY game shipped so far by a quid or more, just so a sum total of what is it, 3 games could fit on one disc?

I myself, a pretty conservative purchaser of games would have been out of pocket to the tune of probably 150 quid or more, just so I had the privelidge of not having to change a disc once in a while...
In fact, scratch that, so far, I don't own a multi disc game... so I would have shelled out that cash for absolutely no benefit whatsoever...

ppppppppfffffft............

I don't it should of come from the begining but i think that maybe now they should release a blu-ray drive as like an add on, instead of the hd-dvd one!

That wouldn't have any baring on this discussion though. A Blu Ray add on wouldn't be used to play games, just films. If MS are going to release games on Blu Ray then they need to launch a new console to replace the 360.

I think they will just have to make do with multi disc games and clever installs where applicable, until they can get a new console out.

Re: Forza 3

I think you're all going way off track until Turn 10 come out and say its confirmed as 2 disks. If it is then they will do it such a way as to not hinder the game too much anyway, they're smart developers.
