Re: Manual or Automatic?

I use manual with auto clutch and on the 360 I use a pad as i've not got a compatible wheel.

Using auto gears would bore me to tears as there would be nothing really to do.

Yeah, it's certainly worth doing. I haven't used auto gears since switching to manual back in the day of PGR2. Adds a lot to the enjoyment of the game and allows for better acceleration and braking. Also some sections are quicker if you say stay in 3rd gear through them, where as auto gears will knock you down to 2nd.

I drive it in manual with the ms wheel with all assists turned off there is no other way to play imo just wish the ms wheel had a clutch.

Re: Manual or Automatic?

I drive auto and have only just started turning the assists off, which does make you faster. I have tried manual a few times but there is too much going on for me, I have to use all my concentration to get round the corners. I think I would change the button layout for the gears on a pad maybe

Re: Manual or Automatic?

engine braking on manual is alot better too. you can cut nearly a second off drag times using manual over automatic so just imagine how much you could cut off a track time. i set an automatic time which was 191st in the wrld out of 104,000 people. i just imagine how quick that wouldve been on manual. so ive started using manual now to beat it

Re: Manual or Automatic?

Try giving manual with clutch a bash, it's tricky to start with but once you get the hang of it it's very satisfying

Re: Manual or Automatic?

Trouble is with the clutch it's faster to stay on the power and just shift up/down, no timing or skill is required, doesn't damage the gears either.

Can't believe T10 let this one through

Hi BYF,

that's not my experience, as you rightly say you can shift that way on any car that has had the race transmission upgrade (or race car), but if you shift like that on anything else i find you get a slight hesitation(revs hitting the limiter) and small amounts of damage to the gearbox that you doesn't happen if you come off the acc briefly.

Re: Manual or Automatic?

i use manual gears and the M$ wheel.

I also use ABS and TC as you get no feedback from the pedals which makes breaking and acceleration nothing like in a real car so no point in punishing myself in the name of being hardcore

That's my biggest frustration with auto....I find (i.e. in the Focus RS) when going round a corner I want it to stay in high revs/3rd gear....that auto then changes it to 4th and knackers any chance I have of catching those in front.

Re: Manual or Automatic?

Not sure if there's a thread on this, probably is, but I'm planning on getting the MS wheel this afternoon. Question is, is it worth £70? I don't mean the quality of it, but does it make Forza a more complete experience? I used to have a thrustmaster wheel back in the heady days of Grand Prix Legends on the PC, which is, still for me, the greatest gaming experience of all time!!
If I can recreate some of that, then I'm in!

On a side note, are all Americans on live complete scumbags? Got shunted last night on the final corner, surely theres some who are OK! Had to laugh too as one of the guys racing with us had a car with 'yankees sucks' on the side......My thoughts exactly.

Not sure about the MS wheel (although Nick uses one and says it's OK), but the G25 transforms the racing games I play on the PS3 & PC (GT5p, rFactor, GTR2, GTL, GTR Evo etc.).

Oh and sadly most Americans on Live do seem to be like that IMO. They do seem to get more enjoyment out of seeing their name at the top (at all costs) rather than the fun of pitting themselves against another opponent fairly.

I'd rather have a good close battle and finish 2nd, knowing that I was simply beaten by a better racer, than just ram him off and finish ahead for a hollow victory. Most Americans seem to prefer a hollow victory over the actual enjoyment than can be gained from a good close race. That is a generalisation and as you say, there are some good, fair Americans out there....I just haven't met many online.

I'm usually an auto person when it comes to playing racing games. But after trying manual with the clutch on the demo i'm a changed person. Manual all the way.

I'm shifting without lifting on all the cars including stock class F ones as it's faster and still get no gearbox damage and I have full damage switched on.

The revs hit the limiter but it's still faster.

Re: Manual or Automatic?

If you want the fastest times, it has to be manual.

uprated gearbox and clutch, drop the final ratio for faster acceleration..

plus it means not having to wait for the auto box to downshift to the right gear for a corner.

Well, that's my view anyhoo
