Drums: 5 lanes vs 4

Hi guys,

Just looking for some feedback on whether 5 lanes on GH (WT, M, and soon Smash hits) is much better than 4 lanes. Has anyone played the same tracks on WT or M in 4 lane and then 5 lanes, and noticed 5 being much better or clearer/easier to read? I assume on 4 lanes that it is just the GH drums orange cymbal and blue tom combined onto blue?

The reason I ask is because I am considering getting a cheapish drum brain for my Ions, with some butchered GH drums for midi conversion. Other than adding some open/closed hi-hat ability, and making it wireless, the brain will additionally give 5 lanes on GH which does seem a bonus to also have, I'm just not sure how much of a bonus.

Re: Drums: 5 lanes vs 4

I found this the other day mate. Theres a review of it over on the rock band forums but i cant seem to get on to post the link at the moment.

Im probably going to go for one at some point soon (ish) funds permitting as it seems to be the cheapest option and you can set different kits up so you could have a GH option and a RB option.

Cant help you with the 5 lane thing though as ive never played on a GH kit. My personal opinion would be it would be nice to have the 5th lane but I wouldnt spend money to get it. I dont play GH enough.

Cheers fella. Yeah I found the same thing on RB about the Alesis Trigger and setitng up different kits, and I made sure to bookmark it as it was very useful, having all the setup values included. I love the size of it, ease of use, and the fact the Ion pedal will work as a hi-hat, but the lack of sounds (quite understandable at the price) makes me hesitate slightly, in possible favour of the DM5. I guess it's not such an issue for you as you have your pc near your setup which you could use to generate sounds with the IO trigger.

I've already bought a GH drum controller and midi pcb, etc, off ebay for £22
in preparation :-)

lol ive been thinking of doing that too. Its worth it for £22! Yeah im not so fussed about sounds as id probably run it through my pc anyway. Can't really afford to go buying an amp on top of a £150 drum brain so the alesis trigger seems like the perfect option for me £125 and i have everything i need. Just wish id though of that before i wasted £65 on the hi-hat kickbox.

I've played both GHWT and RB1/2 thru, and the few cross-over songs arent that different with the extra track, you still need to hit about the same number of notes, it's just which pad you hit.

So basically 5 lanes makes you move your arms about a bit more, as does a "proper" drum kit, not really any more notes, just more feeling of drumming. Just IMO anyway.

I guess I'd agree with this. Especially if your using a kit that mirrors a real kit (the ions or an e-kit). I use the GH brain with Rolands (have I mentioned that before? No?) and LOVE IT! I played WT using a mates (my old) RB1 drums and there just isnt the same degree of immersion. Hitting the yellow and blue pad is tripe!! Smash those cymbals baby!!!!!

Course, it makes no real diff to me as I map my cymbals so green is a pad and cymbal in RB for me, its just a case of learning which is which (its far easier than you'd expect)

So, I'd say 5, especially for Metallica!!! Its so worth having that extra lane and a proper method of playing the drums! I'm addicted!!
