Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

Anyone else think it's getting a bit ridiculous now?

Between the game being rated in Germany and now it being available for pre-order on Gamestop's website, it appears the game is getting a release after all.

on the 28th July.

a month after Guitar Hero: Smash Hits.

Franchise exploitation, ahoy!

I'm going by US release dates though (it was released end of March)

But yeah, 3 GH games in a matter of 4 months is a bit ridiculous.

It's cheap to make and it sells. Just be thankful they aren't doing different guitars with each version .

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

This is getting a bit silly now. If they're not careful they will kill the whole market.

IMHO van halen doesnt warrant a full game release but then (and im sure plenty will disagree) neither did Aerosmith, Metallica or the Beatles. No band needs an entire game devoted to them. Just release the songs as DLC. You could even relase the characters if people like that kind of thing.

Within the space of a year, we're going to get GH:WT, GH:M, GH:SH, GH:VH and GH:5. Not to mention the rumoured Band Hero and DJ Hero editions or the 2 or 3 versions for the DS. Thats 5 confirmed releases in 12 months. Seriously, what other game does that!

Why can't they just follow Harmonix's model and realease them as DLC. Mind you there getting just as bad with the beatles and Lego editions. Although I can kind of understand the lego edition as its aimed at a different market.

It is Activision. Actively sucking franchises dry since 1911.

Actually I'd argue that the Metallica GH did deserve its own game, unlike Aerosmith it's not a cheap cash in and it's obvious from the start that they really put a effort into making it a quality product that is value for money.

As others have stated though, Van Halen are hardly legends that deserve their own game, sure some of their stuff is cool but not enough to justify a game. Aerosmith are a funny old band as they've been around since the seventies but never hit it big until the 90's, in a way they do deserve their status as rock legends.

I'm not convinced all these games are the way to go though but I can only assume they'll be so cheap to make that they don't need massive sales of each release to make money.

Eddie Van Halen is revered as some kind of Guitar God by some people.

The wife will buy this at the drop of a hat. One of her all time favorite bands, well until Dave lee Roth left.

Also just for the record Van Halen was formed in 1972 and has sold more than 80 million albums world wide and have had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.! and that is from wikipedia so it must be true.

What he said. GH:Van Halen was always going to happen. Eddie is a legend. I'm not a huge fan of the music, but you can't deny the influence on modern rock.

Eddie maybe a legend, I'd personally say the music isn't from Van Halen as a group. Also I don't trust those album sales figures at all, sound awfully inflated to me.

I'm not going to dismiss this game offhand but I found Hot For Teacher absolutely no fun to play in World Tour. If this game was more of the same, then it certainly wouldn't be anything I'm interested in.

I see them as the game equivalent of single-band albums, whereas the traditional RB1/2 and GH1/2/3/WT are multi-band compilations - the problem is that was fine in the 80s, but for games i dont think it works.

You dont want the stinkers padding out an album, you want to cherry-pick the best songs to challenge your skills on an instrument or are instantly recognisable for when mates come around. That's why i dont think these band releases work; too much dross which you dont want to pay for.

Personally i think they should be concentrating on DLC and making the instrument hardware really solid - you dont buy a guitar which only lasts a year and then is dead, even a cheapo you can replace the strings etc, and look at Stradivarius violins which are still perfect 300 years on... Make the guitar buttons and strum bar user-replaceable, with swap-out components and better quality triggers. Release drums with user-removable (or separate) midi boxes for real e-drum cross-compatibility. Then every couple of years update the main game and allow DLC to be backwards compatible. Thats the only way i see the genre progressing - allow a decently low barrier to entry, but allow old hands to get more with hardware independence.

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

Everyone seems to be underestimating just how big Van Halen were in the US ! Van Halen broke through at the sametime MTV started broadcasting in the States, they were the darlings of the music video generation. Even Michael Jackson had to adapt his musical style and enlist Eddie Van Halen to break into the "rock" monopoly on MTV. So IMHO they justify their own game as much as Aerosmith or Metallica in the sense that they have a big enough fanbase.
What would be interesting if Activision decided not to release it in the UK. Would you all think "meh!" or would you be annoyed ?

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

I think they hould have spread these games out a bit more what with GH5 and GH/BH (whatever that is) apparently this year as well it really is oversaturating the market. Its also now obvious why DLC fro GHWT is so paltry in comparison to RB.

There are of course positives to releasing disc based games in that invariably the games gets discounted so you can pick 40+ tracks for about £20 after a bit. DLC on the other hand rarely drops in price so after the initial rush to buy i reckons sales of dlc drop fast. Simply allowing transfer of songs to the main GHWT platform would be the ultimate solution to all the complaints but i doubt we'll see this. I still have my doubts to whether HMX would do this for its upcoming games (beatles and lego).

As for Van halen, i cant comment on the music as i havent really heard any of his albums. I wonder tho will it be like the metallica game or more stripped down like ACDC. By now we've all seen the intense production (mo cap etc) thats gone behind the metallica game and its impressive but for a game coming out soon why havent we see similar dvids fro the van halen game?

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

I suspect it will be in a very similar vein to GH: Metallica. Can see bands like Motley Crue, Def Lepard etc making up the other tracks.
I agree that they are in danger of over-saturating the market with GH spin offs but I suspect there is a growing gaming population that solely play rhythm based games.

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

I thought Guitar Hero Aerosmith was very good. I didn't really know Aerosmith much, but playing the game I liked 97% of the songs. I thought it had more 4* and 5* quality songs than GHIII which did contain some very good songs had an awful lot of filler.

As long as it was region free I think people wouldn't care personally, that way those that want it could get it anyway.

I'd be peeved if they didn't release it in the UK out of principal. I might not like something, but that doesn't mean I feel it is acceptable for a whole region to be ignored.

I hate the Wii and the iPod, but that doesn't mean I would be happy if they weren't in the UK. I would be happy if they were never invented though .
I'm still miffed that the Zune isn't available in Europe .

This could be an awesome game. I'm just hoping GH stops copying RB, which essentially "ruined" GHM. It promises enough hard solos to keep me busy.

Re: Guitar Hero: Van Halen........will the madness ever end..?

If GH were trying to "copy" RB i might actually want to play it rather than the poor imitation that GH is

You cant really compare GH3 (or 2 for that matte) to the current GH/RB games as it was aimed solely at guitar players whereas the latter needs to be a bit more rounded for both drummers and vocalists. So if just guitar is your thing GH3 is definately the hardest of the games as it was made to be (too) hard on guitar.

That being said, there are plenty of tough songs on RB for guitar. GG&HT constant motion and that capricio di diablo or whatever you call it to name but a few. Ive not really had any trouble with any songs on GH except BYOB as it took me a while to get the hang of the open bass notes (which for the record i really like. That and the strummed notes while holding a sustain note is pretty much the only reason i play GH anymore)

GH have made the songs too easy by adding that slider bit. You can basically just button mash your way through. There is no skill involved. It took me ages to pass one on hard on GH3. Passed it first time on expert on GH:M and never looked anywhere near failing. I cant see them getting rid of it either sadly so I should imagine GH:Vh will have them too.

I still can't fathom why there's no Acoustic Guitar Hero... I mean, it's all well and good playing the *ahem* 'classics' but how's about not just having the thrash metal-esque songs as the hardest, why not have some, I dunno, Spanish guitar stuff or something that is fingerpickin good.

If its of the same quality as the Metallica game then fair enough, but i do feel this is all a little bit to much to soon for the majority, especially when some people are short of cash

In all honesty.
Van Halen warrant an edition of Guitar Hero moreso than any of the ones who have gone before. It will be the only with an actual guitar hero in the game!
Eddie is the most influential rock guitarist of all time and it is a crying shame that they arent releasing a frankenstein controller to accompany it.

Eddie is the most influential rock guitarist of all time and it is a crying shame that they arent releasing a frankenstein controller to accompany it.
I think not but you're welcome to your opinion. Hendrix for one.

No im not just guitar playing, he was responsible for sooo much more than hendrix ever was. If it were not for EVH for example companies such as Jackson/Charvel/Kramer/Ibanez would never be in position they are today. Ed invented the superstrat idea (not to mention he was paramount in the evolution and introduction of the floyd rose), knocked the world flat on its ass and totally raised the bar for everyone and how everyone approached guitar. He is also one of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever to walk the planet...but doesn't matter though I forget I am in a GH subforum... lol....

You're entitled to you're opinion, personally I think when you discuss the greatest guitar players of all time it should be mainly on their ability compared to those around their ERA. If we're discussing the advances EVH made to equipment and the companies then the title of GH god would goto the first man to make a electric guitar and play it instead surely. Every so often people come along and change the way people play guitar, sure EVH had some input but I personally think Satriani, Hendrix, Chuck Berry were all just as if not more influential (certainly in Berry's case).

Also I would disagree with anyone regardless when they try to claim Kirk Hammett is not a guitar legend and deserving of praise. There is a very good reason One was in GH3.

The game will feature some of Van Halen's greatest hits as well as music from Queen, Weezer, blink-182, The Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age and "many more."
Kotaku - Guitar Hero Van Halen Hits Later This Year - Guitar hero van halen

That's some random bands to be put alongside Van Halen.
