Does the xbox controller work ok with.....

Howdy, OK I just bought GH:WT game without the guitar ( I plan on finding one in the near future) but until then will use the xbox controller. So my question to you guys is can you get by playing the GH games using the controller or would I be wiser to wait till i have sourced a guitar?

I guess what I'm asking is... does having the guitar make the game easier to play as opposed to using the xbox's controller?

You can't use a controller, it needs to be an 'instrument' in GH:WT

If you want to be a bit odd and just use a controller, buy GH2 and GH3

Yeah, like lentini said. The only thing a standard gamepad type controller is used for in world tour is to allow the singer to navigate menues/use star power. You may be able to do the singing part using a headset (I know on the PS3 that you can use any bluetooth or USB mic for singing, including those on webcams etc, but the PS3 is a far more open system and alows those kinds of things for voice chat as well) but for anything else you need either a guitar controller or a drum controller.

If you lived in the US, I'd suggest you go out and buy a Rock band 2 guitar bundle, then you'd have a guitar and another game. However, as you live here in the UK, you can't as the Rock Band 2 instruments aren't even out over here yet (and there's no indication as to when or if they will be). I would therefore suggest you head on over to eBay. New, boxed guitar controllers are pretty common, and can be had from anywhere from £20 to £35 for a world tour guitar, and a bit less for a GH3 guitar. I'd advise against getting a Rock Band 1 guitar or a Guitar Hero 2 guitar, as they are worse than the GH3 ones, which are usually pretty cheap. (The Rock Band one is arguable, but most people seem to prefer the GH3 Les Paul, and the 360 version of the RB one is wired. The GH2 one is just aweful - ugly, cheap, prone to breaking and is also wired...oh and the fret buttons are too short.)

Ah well many thanks for explaining all that I shall indeed be looking at Ebay for a guitar ASAP and will add the drums at a later date. I might actually even try and find the GH3 game&guitar bundle as it sounds like the guitar in 3 is better build quality than WT? Again thanks for your input and help

That's really personal preference. I personally prefer the WT guitar. The fret buttons are the same (supposedly they're more responsive on the WT guitar, but it isn't something I have noticed). The stum bar and whammy bar are longer on the WT Guitar, which feel better to me. The whammy bar is undoubtedly better on the WT guitar, but the stum bar is again preference. The WT one is quieter but feels different, so it's up to you. Other adavntages of the WT guitar are the button positioning (the star power/back button is designed to be pressed with your wrist, and is much better while playing. Of course most people activate star power with the tilt sensor anyway) and the addition of the touch sensitive panel on the neck (which TBH is pretty useless). It is also a bit longer and closer to actual guitar size than the GH3 one.

As for the build quality, I wouldn't say GH3 has better build quality than WT. There seem to have been more complaints about problems in the WT guitars than the GH3 ones, but I don't think thats a build quality problem. What I will say is they both ahve significally better build than the GH2 (360) one...which TBH is a joke. Heck, the Original Guitar Hero controller for the PS2 is better.

This is how I would rank it:
WT > GH3 > RB1 > GH2 360

The Rock Band 2 Guitar would go somewhere on either side of the WT one judging by internet reviews, but it's not available in the UK

If you havn't played GH3 before and want to play it as well, I'd go for a GH3 bundle with guitar. Bear in mind that for local multiplayer you can use 2 guitars, 1 drum kit and a gamepad + mic all at once, so you could get both WT and GH3 if you plan to do that at some point.
