Tournament

I am willing to organize a tournament. We can choose any number of games and difficulty levels. Unfortunately, I don't have GH5 yet, but if that's what everybody wants I'll make a tournament for it (I personally prefer GHM).

Post here if you're interested.

Re: Tournament

possibly.

It depends on whether or not many people are interested, what instruments it will be for and how long it will last.

Re: Tournament

I was planning on running one for guitar first, but I would also be willing to do any other instrument as well: bass, drums, even vocals if people want to.

Re: Tournament

I strongly prefer the charting style in the latest GH games to the simple patterns used over and over again in RB.

Anyway, if people are interested, I'd organise GHM and GH5, or GHSH and GH5, all instruments and difficulties if people join. I'm planning on separate divisions for each game. And even though I don't own a single game of the RB series, I'd be willing to work on that instead if that's what everyone wants.

When enough people join, if that ever happens, then I'll set starting dates and take votes on the songs. I'll make it a decently long time, about 3 weeks long so that it isn't a chore to play all of the songs on different instruments for those that wish to do so. Please post your scores on scorehero with picture (or on this thread if you can post pics on this site).

Let me know if you're interested, what instrument, and your choice of 3-4 songs per game.

Anyone?

not sure how you can make that comment without owning a single RB game! Alot of songs are very difficult infact id say more so than GH (with the exception of GH3) Some of the lower tier songs may have a basic pattern that is repeated buy thats down to the song not how it is charted and they would be done the same in GH! Plus you dont have 30 seconds to hit a note in RB like you do in GH

If enough people are interested, ill take part in a tourney on whichever game you choose (providing i have it of course) although I doubt ill do all 4 instruments again.

Re: Tournament

I have played RB and seen plenty of videos of the game on youtube. I was unable to pass Green Grass and High tides due to differences between the soundtrack on the game and the one I have on my iPod, but my comment is mainly in reference to the charting of the solo in Battery. Despite the smaller timing window, I find it much easier in RB than GH because the patterns are much simpler. Also, the difference in timing window creates some good and bad things about the gameplay. The notes are easier to hit in GH, but due to that, the top scores can only be obtained by squeezing (manipulating the timing window to get more notes under star power). I have not had very much experience on RB but the DLC looks good, especially the Iron Maiden pack.

I think RB definitely offers the best experience for drums unless you are a Metallica fan.

Most evident in GH3 is the much larger timing window and the weird setup for hammer ons. They fixed it a bit for the GHWT interface but it's still larger than any game Harmonix ever made (including GH1 and GH2).

TOURNAMENT

I am making a tournament for GHM (or GHSH) and GH5, plus RB2 if people request it. The tournament will be open from October 10 until October 26 2009. I do not care if the mods make it official or not because the point is to have fun and not to win honors/awards.

Please suggest songs if you plan on participating. lol

You can always send pictures to clarinet5000@live.com.

What games do you have (if you get your 360 back)?

Re: Tournament

That's a good question. Right now there definitely won't be enough people to have 3 or four different difficulties.

I think that if you can complete all of the songs on a difficulty, then you should not compete on any lower difficulty. Maybe we can use the PFO system, where you proportion the scores to each other according to the base 100% value of a song with no star power used. However, with this system, I want no one to play on easy. Everyone should be able to play on at least medium difficulty. All I can ask is that no one 100% every song unless it's on expert, and chances are that no one here is that good. If you are, I will have heard of your gamertag before.

For example: if a base score is 200000 on medium, 250000 on hard, and 325000 on expert with no SP, then your hard score would be multiplied by 0.8, and your expert score would be multiplied by approximately .615.

Please send me pictures via e-mail for confirmation and I will let you know how your score compares to others so you know whether or not you might want to try to improve.
I will be playing for fun, but because I am organizing the tournament, I by default cannot win.

This is as fair of a system that I can think of. Please feel free to suggest improvements as well as instruments.

So far the tournament will be only guitar and bass unless people want drums too.

So far, there are 2 suggestions for GHSH, 1 for GH5, 1 for GHM and 0 for GHWT.

Would it not just be easier for people to post their scores in the tournament thread? That system seemed to work just fine for the RB2 tourny earlier this year:

AVF RB Tournament Scores Archive

People can either upload the photos to their own webspace or use the built-in forum tool to display them.

Re: Tournament

Sure that works fine. It doesn't really matter whether or not it's official because this isn't an official tournament.

Also, what leaderboard? XBL? Then you can just use your previous best scores and it's not a tournament anymore.

Just don't say 545K on Dyers Eve guitar, this score is possible but you know what I mean. DON'T WORRY ABOUT POSTING PHOTOS, JUST SCORES, as long as they're real.

Re: Tournament

you could but what would be the point in partcipating if your just going to use an old score. Cant see anyone doing that.

You could do what we did for the RB tourney and just insist on photo proof for FC's (we did GS's too but since that doesnt apply to GH there is no point) unless of course you dont get an extra point for FCing a song.

How is the scoring going to work?

Re: Tournament

I need to make it fair for all difficulties, so I was going to use the PFO system to balance points. But I think that maybe you should get an extra 10000-15000 points per difficulty above medium to discourage people from playing on medium to FC every song. In other words, why play on medium if you can 5* all of the songs on hard? I like the idea of posting photos, but I will find out whether or not scores are legit by means of XBL leader boards, scorehero, and optimal scores for the songs. If there are any scores that are not legit, then you will be disqualified. Please don't cheat. You're not missing out on any prizes if you don't win.

I will post the actual score and difficulty next to the score that is calculated for tournament purposes. My scores do not count.

So far I only have enough people for GHSH, so I'm thinking the set list will be either four or five songs picked from these.

Play With Me
Mother
Beast and the Harlot
Bark at the Moon
Caught in a Mosh
Godzilla
Cowboys From Hell
Round and Round
Freya
Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart

Let me know what other games you want.

Reminder: The tournament starts this coming Saturday.

What songs are exportable to GH5?

And I'm picking GHSH for now because that's what other people mentioned.

The scores should be close enough but I'll figure out the difference in optimal points if there is any.

Re: Tournament

“Caught In A Mosh” – Anthrax
• “Cult Of Personality” – Living Colour
• “Free Bird” – Lynyrd Skynyrd
• “Freya” – The Sword
• “Heart-Shaped Box” – Nirvana
• “Hey You” – The Exies
• “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” – Pat Benatar
• “I Love Rock 'N Roll” – Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
• “I Wanna Rock” – Twisted Sister
• “Message In A Bottle” – The Police
• “Miss Murder” – AFI
• “Monkey Wrench” – Foo Fighters
• “No One Knows” – Queens Of The Stone Age
• “Nothin’ But A Good Time” – Poison
• “Play With Me” – Extreme
• “Psychobilly Freakout” – Reverend Horton Heat
• “Rock And Roll All Nite” – Kiss
• “Shout At The Devil” – Mötley Crüe
• “The Trooper” – Iron Maiden
• “Woman” – Wolfmother
• “Yyz” – Rush

no idea if GH5 scores tehm the same though. I would imagine it does but who knows with activision. dont worry if its a problem, im not that fussed about participating

Also, whatever list you pick should be a mix of different difficulties not just insanely difficult ones. If your just picking stupidly difficult ones then you can count me out. I dont mind if there is one or two but im not playing a set list of 5 difficult songs.

Re: Tournament

Thanks so much. I'll make sure to pick from this list then.

How about

Caught in a Mosh
Cult of Personality
Freya
I Wanna Rock
The Trooper
Woman

This avoids anything too easy or too tough. Any objections?

Depends on the instrument. On vocals, for example, the answer is no way. But it looks like this is pretty much restricted to guitar.

Approved. But I'd take Caught in a Mosh over Freebird because it's so long. I was only going to pick 5 or so songs from my first list, and I probably would've gotten lots of people saying that they would need to play Play With Me on hard.

This is a better balance of easy songs vs. hard songs.

I don't know. It seems as if about 5 or 6 people will play so far.

And don't worry if you can't pass a song on expert. Play it on hard instead.
And sometimes I almost fail on Freebird. It's so long but nothing is impossible and the annoying patterns never end. And then the beginning of the Caught in a Mosh solo sounds like ****.
I was trying to avoid Heart Shaped box because it's one of the 2 or 3 songs that I FCd on my sight read, but my scores don't count (the other FCs on sight read were Smoke on the Water and it might've been my second run on Hey You).
