Nick Mason - 'No new Pink Floyd stuff, but RB/GH game not ruled out"

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Rock stars cool over video games

Quote:
Mason said that Pink Floyd has not ruled out working on a Rock Band or Guitar Hero-style game in the future.

"I think we'd consider it," he told the BBC. "I think everyone's looking at new ways of selling the music because the business of selling records has almost disappeared.

"I'm of the old guard who are really sad about that, because I always liked the concept of the album - rather than just cherry-picking tracks - and also the business of the art work that went with it."

He added that any new material from Pink Floyd was "very unlikely".

"We're all still interested in the catalogue and trying to make the most of it, re-mastering when necessary, and looking at other things that we could do with it," Mason added.

"I think we're all still very proud of it - we do talk to each other occasionally."
The whole article is very down on RB/GH, but it's nice to hear that Floyd might get a game to themselves.

interesting. Maybe they will do a pink floyd track pack ala AC/DC. Here's hoping anyway.

I do think his comments are wrong about discouraging people from playing real instruments. I would never of though about learning to play the drums if it wasnt for these games. I also bought a real guitar to learn thanks to GH/RB. (although I cant play it for toffee!)

Im sure there are many other like me. Personally, I think these games are a good stepping stone to learning a real instrument. Yes I know the guitar in particular is nothing like the real thing and the drums only teaches you the basics but it does get people to immerse in the music and think about learning the real thing.

I would give my left plum for Pink Floyd RB/GH.

And probably the right.

I think thats really cool that it got you into playing proper instruments.

For me it's about enjoying some of my favourite music. I see no difference between listening to a CD, watching a music video or playing a track on Rock Band. Of course they are different mediums with different levels of interactivity but they are all ways to enjoy the music.

I wish the musicians would get off the old high horse about 'Why not pick up a real instrument instead of a plastic one' as it enabled our good friend Chewyx to get into playing real instruments, and I'm sure it did for many more people. For the rest of us, why not let your fans enjoy your music in other ways? (I'm looking at you Jimmy Page )

That'd be incredible if they came to RB (please not GH! PLEASE!). They'd fully deserve their own standalone game, like the AC/DC pack so that it could be imported. They could come up with some pretty impressive visuals for it too, possibly like the Beatles dreamscapes.

I can understand the 'play a real instrument' thing...but the main reason I play this game is to play with my friends who aren't overly interested in music generally but love playing RB. They wouldn't want to learn and instrument but a drunk evening of messing around and laughing the night away to RB is hugely appealing to them.

I'm the other way round. I played guitar for ages, gigging with a band for a couple of years. It all went out of the window once the kids turned up.
GH/RB lets me muck about musically, without dragging all my old kit down from the loft. I fact when I do bother getting the old plank out I hate having the amp down low and get bored pretty quickly. I think I actually prefer the plastic axe.

Re: Nick Mason - 'No new Pink Floyd stuff, but RB/GH game not ruled out"

I'm another who picked up the drum sticks for real on the back of RB - more specifically when GHWT arrived, I decided I would seriously learn to play the drums.

So 9 months later (since i got my proper Yamaha kit), I'm still going strong and see the drums as part of my life going forward now.

Its a shame artists have to come out and slag off the 'plastic guitars' without fully understanding what its doing for people. Even if people dont go onto play the real instruments, then it still gives you the closest feeling you are even going to get to being in a real band.
