Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

Quote:
That's not the only thing Vedder is thinking about, either. While acts like AC/DC and Aerosmith were winning new fans with branded versions of "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero," respectively, Pearl Jam was sitting on the videogame sidelines. The band finally took the plunge this spring when it made all of the songs from "Ten" available for download on "Rock Band" the same day the reissue hit stores. Curtis declined to discuss sales, but sources at MTV say the "Ten" songs have generated more than 850,000 downloads.

"Backspacer" will also be available on "Rock Band" the day it comes out, and Target has an exclusive on an edition of the album featuring access to download its songs for "Rock Band" on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. It's a precursor to a dedicated Pearl Jam game that could hit stores in 2010. Although MTV wouldn't confirm details, fan input is already being solicited on PearlJam.com to determine which live versions of songs from the band's catalog will be included.

Aside from Ten, I'm really not that familiar with a great deal of Pearl Jam stuff. If they exclude Ten and Backspacer (due to them being available as DLC), will they have enough stuff for a full game, or will it be half a dozen Pearl Jam tracks, and a load of filler as per the GH titles?

Well i havent bought a PJ album since Yeild (or no code i cant remember) but i dont think i'll be able to resist another PJ album for rockband as ten was just so fun. As for the standalone game for next year i'm sure it'll be a track pack like ACDC rather than a full band game with lookalikes like beatles or gh:metallica.

It'll be the same for the Green day pack when that comes along as well.

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

A Pearl Jam game (like the Beatles/Metallica) would be cool though as they encompass a wide range of music and eras.

Imagine starting in the late 80's early 90's with;

Bone China/Crown of Thorns - Mother Love Bone
Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dog
Pushing Forward Back - Temple of the Dog

Then into the first PJ era with some "Ten" stuff, then

Go
Dissident
Rearview Mirror all from "VS"

along with

Outshined - Soundgarden
Crackerman - Stone Temple Pilots
Teen Spirit - Nirvana
We Die Young - Alice in Chains
It Aint Like That - Alice in Chains

Then carrying on through the late 90s early 2000s stuff, throw in some Neil Young (stuff off Mirrorball), Chris Cornell, Dinosaur Jr etc.

Got the essential 'child of the 90s' (ok, 20-something!) right there!

I'd buy it and probably never play another game!

Don't forget Matt Cameron is now Pearl Jam's drummer, and he's ex-Soundgarden, so an excellent excuse to squeeze in some early stuff - i'd love to see some UltraMega OK and Louder Than Love (as well as more BadMotorFinger) on RB2!

20 somethings? I'm almost 40 and remember all the pre-Nirvana/pre-popularist grunge scene - mid to late 80s, old enough to drive, drink, *cough* and stuff Beach parties after a day's surfing listening to Green River, Suicidal Tendencies or other alt/indie surf/skate music

I'd love a pre-90s Grunge / Alternative / Indie standalone release, before the big corporate sell-out, but sadly the potential market is probably quite small... however that's why the news of the Rock Band Network, and Sub Pop showing interest, is such good news for alternative-children of the 80s is so good!

Not sure i'd buy "Backspacer", wait and see if its any good i guess.

If The Fixer is anything to go by, it's going to be great

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

I do like your idea Pboreham and would buy that game like a shot but i actually prefer where HMX are going with their DLC and sepecially RB Network. More album DLC all the way for me, I'd buy most albums by the bands you've mentioned there (just like many here my teenage years were spent listening to grunge/rock).

Whilst i love early soundgarden i didnt find JC Pose fun to play at all on rockband, wheras the other songs where superb fun (spoonman, black hole sun etc) to play. Maybe their early stuff was a bit harder and less refined, more alt strumming chords and less arpeggios.

PS i'd buy temple of the dog no questions.

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

Does anyone know if there will be a similar deal in the UK to the one that Target are offering in the US? If you buy a CD copy of Backspacer there then you get a download code for the RB DLC. I've had no luck so far finding a similar offer

Probably a US only deal like the Best Buy one with the Ten re-issue

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

Not actually bothered about this at all. I got the Ten DLC but still not really played it that much. I am not a huge Pearl Jam fan, although can play Alive on real guitar including all the solos and the like. Thats one of the reasons I got it on RB and it does play on plastic guitar surprisingly well, giving a similar feel to the real thing (if that's possible!).

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

Just gave the album a runthrough on Expert drums and I thought I'd share my views:

Gonna See My Friend - very up tempo, frantic drumming. Pretty difficult.
Got Some - same as above, very frantic
The Fixer - Very, very, very fun drum chart. One of the best of the bunch, tricky in places but not too challenging.
Johnny Guitar - Another fun drum chart.
Just Breathe - The first two thirds of the chart is basically a constant yellow cymbal roll, it's OK.
Amongst The Waves - Sightread FC for this one, pretty easy but great fun.
Unknown Thought - Another pretty easy chart
Supersonic - back to the frantic drumming, some tricky double kicks
Speed Of Sound - Fun but easy, another sightread FC
Force of Nature - Probably my favourite drum chart of the lot, not difficult but a few tricky fills
The End - no drum track

All in all, a great album to play drums too. Been looking forward to this album for a while and it doesn't disappoint. Not as enjoyable as Ten, which has been my favourite drumming DLC to date, but definitely recommended.

Rating - 8/10

Re: Pearl Jam - Backspacer coming as DLC on 20th September

i most certainly agree with Lentini's drum review. Its mostly great fun (though not quite as brilliant as porch, alive or evenflow). Having said that i started playing on guitar when i first downloaded this and i was dissappointed tbh. Now the songs are great in themselves and many hark back to classic PJ but there are few solos (maybe about 5-6 in the entire album) and the few that are there are woefully short. So i cant in honesty recommend this album to guitarists (unless your a PJ fan, or dont mind strumming). Drummers however will like it alot. I guess Ten set the bar way too high. I reckon i'll pick the album up for my car at some point.
