How to Progress

What's the best method to progress from medium to hard on the drums? I've managed hard up to apprentice, but after that, many of the songs are just beyond me. I don't find that slowing them down helps a lot either, because once back to normal speed, it all seems different.
I can only manage medium on guitar as well (which would give my nephew a laugh because he's a guitarist in Def Leopard!).
But I'm determined to make progress with the drums. I'm just not too sure what the best approach is.

Re: How to Progress

Well the drums is a funny one. Like you I started on easy, then medium. I certainly am not a drummer, however now I can do hard and some of expert level of drums (up to the Challenging tier of songs).

In order to progress I would say play lots of the difficult medium drums and then try the easier hard level drums and you will find that after a while your leg starts to work automatically and you dont have to try so hard. You just start doing. Then you try a few of the more testing hard songs and after a while you find it starts to happen there. Unfortunately there is no easy way to progress apart from lots of practice, but its such fun that I didnt mind.

So try something like Rush's The Trees or Spoonman on medium, then step it up to maybe Bodhavista on medium. If you can get through those and they start to become easier, then move up to hard onto easier hard tracks like Today or My Own Worst Enemy and see how you get on. They wont seem so hard.

Good Luck

Re: How to Progress

I went from Easy to Expert by playing and playing and playing.

and then playing some more.

Seriously, the only way you will progress on these type of games is playing and practising A LOT!

Pretty much what i'm doing, so good advice from SlyBoy; do the 0/1/2 dot songs on Hard, which will introduce off-beat kicking, double-kicking and fast double/triples. Do the 3/4/5 dot songs on Medium which will give a lot of movement around the pad.

Medium - Prog rock & metal
Hard - Grunge/rock eg: Black Hole Sun, Alive, Today, Re-Education (Through Labor), any Black Sabbath
Expert - easy rock anything 0/1 dots like Say it Aint So etc

I've got the problem that playing Metal on Medium is too simplistic, but i get brutalised on Hard - just need to get better i suppose but the step up in the track charts feels poorly done in the difficulty spikes. Either Medium needs a few more notes thrown in, or Hard needs less kicking? But yeah, just more practice needed...
