360 won't play certain media files.

Hi all, I've been an owner of an Xbox 360 since launch. After the "optional media update" it played all different types of video formats either from a USB memstick or home-made dvd-r without any problems. Then last month my trusty launch xbox died and I ended up buying a new Elite. Luckily, I had all my profile and game saves on an official microsoft memory stick (which I bought cheap when I was in America). The reason being, one time for some reason the original 360 hard drive went nuts and needed reformatting- so I got the memstick in case it ever happened again- I didn't fancy losing all my saves etc. Anyway- when I plugged in the Elite, I simply used the memstick to carry over my profile and saves and also a few trial arcade games. For some reason, the trial arcade games refuse to be played unless I'm connected to Xbox Live, which is a hassle as I have to connect via an ethernet cable from a homeplug (which means a lot of faffing around). Then I tried playing a few videos from a dvd. Some of the files play no problem, but others requested the downloading of the "optional media update" No problem, I thought, connected to Live and downloaded the update and the files played no problem. Then I tried again when the 360 wasn't connected to Live and it still says it won't play certain file types unless I download the update, which I already did. I've tried having the update on both the hard-drive and the memstick, but these files just will not play unless I'm connected to Live.
Anyone got any idea what is going on? I neveer used to have this problem.

Re: 360 won't play certain media files.

yeah that sounds about right - the update wants to check on live everytime you use it if you move from one xbox to another. I cant exactly remember the way to stop it but I think you need to "offically" move your account to the new xbox.

I believe the media update is delt with in the same way as downloaded games e.g they are both locked to your account and xbox. but to allow you to play them on a friends xbox they let the you logon and authorise it via live.

As you are using an xbox you didnt originally download the update on it thinks you are on a friends xbox (even if you download it again everytime) - you need to let it know that this is now your xbox and your live account lives on it - sorry I cannot remember how this is done as its been ages since I did it.

EDIT
think this is it

Damnit- it hasn't made a difference. Apparently, it's a result of the firmware upgrade. I've no idea why Microsoft are so insistent on knowing what I'm watching.
