Poor extender performance via wired connection

I’ve just set up the Media Center Extender for my 360 using a wired connection yet the performance is awful

Media Centre prompted me on setup that performance was poor but the connention is wired via a 54MBps router
I was wondering if this is either a firewall issue or something else?

The router is a Netgear DG834GT and I have 10MB BT Broadband but I didn’t think the broadband speed had anything to do with it as I thought it was more of a LAN connection

Thank you

Re: Poor extender performance via wired connection

Youre right it is a LAN, might be worth jumping into your router settings and checking UPNP is turned on. Make sure your NAT type is Open.

Re: Poor extender performance via wired connection

My UPNP is turned on and my NAT type is open

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium too so I wonder if it's an issue there

Re: Poor extender performance via wired connection

Could be, theres bound to be some issues while its in its infancy to the public., thats why Im staying with Vista for a few more years.

Is it streaming ok? Like loading on the 360 and all?

I actually stopped using Media Centre and just accessed my files via the Music/Video player. IMO works much better, and Im doing wireless from my lappy then Wired to 360.

I am using a N type router though at 300 Mbps.

Re: Poor extender performance via wired connection

The 360 loads it up fine but it does take a while to move the menu and to select something

I've just done a speed test and it's showing 2-3 bars but on a wired 108MBps connection it should be higher than that surely

I have however inbound and outbound services set into my router for my 360, I think it was when I was using wireless. Would this not affect performance?

Re: Poor extender performance via wired connection

Yeah the signal wont be as strong but it should affect anything.

Im stumped on this one. Might be worth waiting and seeing if another member has the same setup, may be able to provide a better answer.

I do exactly the same, had no end of problems the other way.

To the OP, I just allowed sharing to the xbox via the library tab in windows media player, then just browse my files through video library in the 'my xbox' section on the 360. Works like a charm. Sorry if you've already tried this.

A bit pedantic on my behalf maybe, but you're getting wireless and wired speeds mixed up here. I used to have a DG834GT, and it has 4x 100Mbps ethernet ports, and a wireless connection of up to 108Mbps. Wireless G is usually around up to 54Mbps though, this is the usual speed.

You're running through wired and I have streamed 1080p this way, 100Mbps is enough to do this. Essentially it's being clogged up by something on your network, possibly your router, possibly your PC.

Myself, having had experience with Netgear products for a number of years, have found that my new D-Link router is far better and hassle free (though more expensive). I'm not sure I'd go with Netgear again after trying the competition. My 2ps worth.

I know I was getting a bit mixed up with speeds there but you corrected me before I could do it myself
I've tried a few new things including trying it on a couple of other PC's and a laptop and still I get poor performance so it'll probably be the router which is causing the problem I thinks

I'll be moving out soon enough anyway so I'll just add a new router to the list of things to get

Thank you for all your help anyway
