Streaming from NAS on new xbox now gives error code - 53-C00DF238

I have a usb to ethernet dongle so i can plug my external hard drive onto my home network. it has a media server so i can playback video on my xbox, and on my old xbox it always did this perfectly.
but now on my new xbox it reads all the files contained on the drive but when i load up any .avi i get the following error:
"Unplayable Content:
The connection to your computer was lost. Make sure your computer is turned on, connected to your network, and is running media sharing software.
Status Code: 53-C00DF238"
it will play .wmv's, and mpg's... so why not .avi's?
ive tried uninstalling and reinstall the optional mmedia update but no luck...
anyone have any ideas?
thanks.

Re: Streaming from NAS on new xbox now gives error code - 53-C00DF238

I did not think you could stream AVI files over the network and only via a Ext Hard Drive connected via USB.
Have you tried connecting direct to the 360 and see if the files play ?

Could check out the FAQ and see if that helps for file types

Frequently Asked Questions: Xbox 360 FAQ v7.0

EDIT - Ignore me because i am sure i have streamed AVI files with no issues

Sorry Yubious i am no help

thanks anyway deftones, is a nuisance cos it worked fine with my old xbox. not a huge issue tho cos i can always just plug the drive directly in but its just convenient to run it overr NAS.

Re: Streaming from NAS on new xbox now gives error code - 53-C00DF238

not sure if this really applies to the original poster but thought i would post how i solved this error on my setup:

After upgrading to Windows 7 I started to get the same error code on all my media shared via Ethernet Cable to my Xbox, after much hunting around online and trying all the various solutions people have posted already i was on the verge of going back to XP and seeing if that got it working again.

But then I checked my firewall settings and noticed it was set up to allow different programs for "Home" connections and "Public" Connections (Still cant figue out how to change my LAN connection to "Home" in W7 ) so I allowed anything to do with Media Player / Media Centre in the Public column and voila all working again as it was before my upgrade.

Hope this helps somebody at least, I notice alot of unanswered questions regarding this error code around the web

Might stop swearing at Windows 7 now

is this within the settings on windows 7? or your routers firewall?

It was in the Windows 7 firewall settings, I'm on an xp machine at the moment so I cant remember exactly how I got to that page but I will post more detailed instructions when I get home tonight.

Go to:

Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall > Allowed Programms

This brings up a screen with a list of Programms and two columns of tick boxes, one for "Home" (My Wireless Card) and one for "Public" (My LAN to my 360) all the WMP or Media Centre reatled ones were ticked on "Home" but not on "Public" I ticked all the boxes related to WMP or Media Centre in Public column and have had no problems since.

Hope this helps

Thumbs up SOLVED - maybe

Sorry to revist an old thread, but I had this exact same problem when I upgraded my 360 premium to a Super Elite last month. In my situation I stream video content from my Windows Home Server to my XBox360 via ethernet.

This worked for me, I hope it will work for others, but i guess only for those that have new consoles.

Go to Xbox.com | System Use - Transferring Content Licenses to a New Console

and complete the wizard to transfer licence content from your old console to the new one. When following the wizard online you will be asked to power on your xbox, go to Download History and redownload the licences that were present on the old console. One of the 'licences' to download again was the Optional Media Update.

I can now stream videos without any connection lost errors.

For those that haven't got new consoles and are experiencing this issue, maybe try downloading the Optional Media Update again.
