Why will random files not work?

Hello,

I have have a number of programmes on an external hard drive that I connect to my xbox 360. I have just started watching them and about 30% do not seem to work, they come up with an error: 69-COOD36BE. Every file is .avi and I'm sure this is something that must have happened recently. They are randomly placed as to which ones work and which ones don't.
Anyway is there an easy way to search the entire drive for these unsupported files (to save checking each one) and can they be converted to .avi's that will play like the other 70%?
Many thanks
Baron

Re: Why will random files not work?

I think the issue is probably the codec used to encode the video/audio stream within the avi file.

You could probably fix them by re-encoding, making sure to choose a supported codec (theres a list of supported codecs and other info that may be helpful here: Streaming AVI video to Xbox 360 Error ).
The re-encoding may cause a loss in quality depending on settings used etc.

As for searching to find the files, I don't know of a way to do it without going through and trying each one, not to say that there isn't a way though.

Re: Why will random files not work?

This souds like it may be linked to the 11 Aug update. My Xbox has coped with every divx/xvid I have ever thrown at it, and now most wont work, even ones I have watched many times before and even WMVs.

I get the same sort of error messages, and the fix in the stickied threaed doesnt seem to work for me.

Im tearing my hair out!
